Jake led Jimmy back to the Silverado. Barry got in at the passenger’s side, sandwiching a stunned Jimmy between them.

The nurse on duty on Bess’s ward recognized Jimmy immediately and he was shown into his mother’s room. Barry and Jake were given directions to the waiting room.

Sitting in one of the padded plastic chairs, hat in hand, Jake looked lost.

Settling next to the cowboy but resisting the urge to give him a hug, Barry said, “I don’t know Bess very well but she seems like a tough lady.”

Jake found a weak smile from somewhere. “She is. Although raising three sons and…Frank, she’s had to be.”
