Capítulo 43: Internships with Last laser: Part 2

After trying for almost three hours and not making any progress, Doryoku understood that this test was much more difficult than it seemed, something that did not surprise him knowing Last laser.

It was horrible sitting while being harassed and watched from all angles, so much so that Doryoku couldn't concentrate on searching as any noise or even a breeze made him instinctively alert to a surprise attack.

Still not all was lost since after so many failed attempts, he was finally able to at least find the way forward.

And the first of all was... to get used to it almost as always, in order to have a clearer mind and be able to pass the first test, Doryoku had to get used to it and recognize that no one would probably attack him... Probably.

It was easier said than done, especially knowing how cautious Doryoku is, so the rest of the day he just sat and tried to get used to it with his eyes closed.

At one point, Doryoku felt hungry so knowing that this only made his concentration worse, he decided to go to the kitchen to get something to eat.

Opening his eyes, he was surprised to realize that it was night, specifically 9:00 p.m. so Doryoku spent almost 12 hours trying with almost no progress.

Last laser told him about the fact that he could use the kitchen without problems if he felt hungry, at some time that now he wasn't quite sure which one he was.

Anyway, Doryoku reached the kitchen and felt much calmer, since although he still felt watched, the living room was much worse.

The kitchen was ridiculously arranged with total precision as was the living room, only here were more objects and it was much more conspicuous.

Doryoku looked for some ingredients and prepared some pancakes, something classic but quite effective, although it should be noted that he took more time leaving everything as precise as it was before than cooking.

After taking his plate and sitting down at a small table in the center of the kitchen, Doryoku quietly began to eat as he probed further into the room with considerable curiosity.

There was a clock with the form of a chicken, and Doryoku was sure it was the most kitchen-appropriate decoration one could have, that and a flower magnet on the fridge.

As he looked around him investigating every detail, Doryoku glanced over the shelves and could see a small glass box, which seemed to contain something inside.

At first glance the box was very beautiful, it seemed to have several engravings and carved figures that made it quite elegant, but at this distance it was almost impossible to know specifically what it was like.

At that moment Doryoku shook his head trying to ignore the curiosity and knowing that a glass object near him was simply a recipe for disaster, so he simply continued eating while looking out the window at the night's activity.

Still, the curiosity was there and it wouldn't go away, which gave Doryoku another reason to learn to control his emotions sooner rather than later.

Doryoku finished eating and cleaned his plate before trying to move away from the enticing crystal mystery box.

Now that he remembered, he still had his backpack on his back, so he left it in a corner of the kitchen, trying to make it as symmetrical as possible.

And right next to the corner where Doryoku put his backpack, there was a small bench to reach the height of the shelves and therefore the box.

'I curse you bench of the devil' thought Doryoku rather annoyed with the poor bench that was not to blame for being so convenient.

Doryoku picked up the bench and quietly carried it to the direction of the crystal box, then quietly set it on the ground and looked around as if he was stealing cookies.

Taking a closer look, Doryoku was shocked to see how detailed it was, to the point where he thought it was some kind of work of art.

The details seemed to be between flowers and snow, a strange combination but somehow the one who carved the glass box managed to put it together perfectly.

Looking inside the box, Doryoku could see a glass hummingbird, which was made with extreme delicacy to the point where it looked real, with red and green colors adorning it.

Doryoku reached out his hand to take the small glass box and...

"Hey kid, who told you you could play with that?" Last laser said making Doryoku jump in fright and get off the small bench instantly.

"Sorry Laser-sensei!" Doryoku said rather embarrassed and flustered as he apologized several times for his behavior.

Seeing the boy's extremely guilty expression, Last laser could only let out a tired sigh and say...

"That figure is very delicate boy, that's why the shelf is even proof of any tremor, the slightest touch or sudden movement could break it" Last laser said with an explanatory tone and calmer so as not to continue exalted Doryoku.

"Besides... That figure is probably the most important thing for me in this house, it's a gift from someone I appreciated very much" Last laser said with a slightly nostalgic tone, then went up the stairs and continued with his work.

Those words... They had quite an impact on Doryoku, so much so that he instinctively put his hand on his chest where his wine-colored tie usually is, even though it wasn't with him now.

The gift of someone you appreciate very much, was one of the few feelings that Doryoku understood and had lived, so he instantly understood the value of that box.

After that scene, Last laser went back to his room and kept working for a couple more hours.

'There is one who watches me from my 12:45, a rookie although at least he respects the distance of the rest' thought Last laser instantly noticing the direction of all the informants around him while he was sitting at his work table and looking discreetly at the window in front of him.

Just at that moment Last laser felt a little thirsty and went back down the stairs quite tired.

And upon reaching the kitchen he found Doryoku still in exactly the same place he was a few hours ago.

"It wasn't that big of a deal boy" said Last laser shaking his head at the boy's sometimes insane caution.

"B-but I didn't mean to break it" Doryoku said rather nervously as he still moved.

Last laser walked in front of him, opened the refrigerator door and took a bottle of water before closing it abruptly, making Doryoku quite upset.

"You see? The earthquake's shelf is very useful" Last laser said quite calmly as he drank some water.

"I'm sorry, I know how it feels to have something that even if it's material is very valuable for something else" Doryoku said this time moving more freely and apologizing again.

"It's good to see that you learned from your mistakes, but for God's sake stop apologizing" Last laser said already a little annoyed by Doryoku's continuous apologies.

Doryoku was about to say something again, but a second after thinking, he decided to go to sleep better in the guest room.

And that was the first day of Doryoku training, a rather strange one for a change.

The next morning, Doryoku was back in the center of the living room trying to discover the address of any of the informants around him.

It was not a waste of time to be there even if there was no progress, there were several moments when the pressure dropped in what Doryoku imagined was a break in shifts, and those moments were a golden opportunity to concentrate on a specific place.

Even so, not thinking about anything else was complex, so Doryoku breathed slowly and calmly so as not to lose control and concentration.

At one point, some looks disappeared, so Doryoku frowned and concentrated as much as possible to try to discover the origin of at least one of them.

Doryoku was beginning to sweat a little from the mental strain this exercise gave him, but just a moment later, he opened his eyes and quickly got up to look out one of the windows facing the hearth's entrance, noticing a subtle movement in a bush.

Doryoku smiled slightly at this, though he decided to go on for a while longer to develop more confidence in his abilities, taking a seat in the living room again.

After a few hours, finding that specific informant was much easier, although the simplicity of finding him made it more difficult to focus on the other presences.

"How are you doing boy?" said Last laser suddenly, who was sitting on the sofa reading a book and causing Doryoku to jump in another small jump of fright.

'Ugh, I guess that's how Okā-chan feels when I move quietly' Doryoku thought, finally understanding why his mother always lectures him by appearing out of the blue.

"I managed to spot one, he's in that direction" Doryoku said in a calm tone as he pointed to the direction where that bush was.

"Pretty good, although to your misfortune that's the most rookie of all" Last laser said with recognition, but then giving a strong blow of reality.

"Could you at least tell me how many investigators are around?" Doryoku said weeping internally as he searched for any show of mercy.

"I guess, it's not like that helps you much" Last laser said with a shrug as he drank some tea.

"Currently there are 7, 4 of them are rookies, one of them is terrible which is the one you were able to track and the last two are quite good although they still need a little practice" Last laser said with a calm tone as if it were a walk in the park spot so many people.

"Any recommendation?" Doryoku asked letting out a tired sigh and settling nicely into his place.

"Take at least one break a day, although it seems strange to be nervous you must also have a certain concentration" Last laser said with a warning tone while he continued enjoying his tea.

"I guess this is the best time, I've been at least an hour, right?" Doryoku asked rather tiredly and somewhat curiously.

"It's 5:00 p.m. boy, this is my afternoon tea" Last laser said in a calm tone as he picked up his cup of tea and Doryoku had blank eyes.

"Yeah, it's break time" Doryoku said getting up from his place and walking towards the kitchen to prepare something to eat and call his mother before he forgets.

"Set everything right, yesterday I found the milk carton at 89° instead of 90 and it was a pretty bad day" Last laser said with a warning tone and a bit annoyed as Doryoku looked for his squad in his backpack.

The rest of the day was pretty simple really, nothing new to comment on.

Novice Author's Diary {Third Note}

—Having affection for your work is stressful, for a simple and common reason, not wanting to ruin it.

I imagine that it is something common in any author, much more in the best ones, of which I cannot imagine how horrible it must be to bear the worldwide affection of your work.

If someone tells me that's why Togashi doesn't continue HxH, then I'd totally understand, even though I want to see the dark continent.
