Capítulo 3: A Friend

[3 years later] [Thursday - 7:00 a.m.]

Doryoku's alarm started to sound and he stopped it instantly since he was awake half an hour ago.

Doryoku got up, brushed his teeth, combed his hair a couple of times (which was not very cooperative) and changed clothes to go to school still wearing long sleeves, all this without making any kind of noise that would wake up his mother.

Today was a good day, as it was one of the few days when his mother had her day off, so Doryoku preferred to let her sleep and not disturb her.

Doryoku entered his mother's room and deactivated her alarm, then gave her a little kiss on the forehead and prepared to go to the school.

After being completely ready, Doryoku took the key, unlocked the door, and left still without making any noise towards the school.

His school was much further away than kindergarten, so Doryoku even had to take a train to get there.

The chill morning in Japan always calmed Doryoku, and even sometimes he preferred to walk rather than take the train to enjoy his journey.

It was still 7:30 a.m. when Doryoku arrived at his school, so there was practically no one around, something Doryoku also enjoyed arriving early.

The day passed normally until breakfast time, in which Doryoku sat as usual against the wall while he hugged his backpack to accommodate himself and not cause stains on it.

In order not to wake his mother, Doryoku didn't even eat breakfast, so his stomach was slightly protesting at the lack of food.

Doryoku took a cookie that his mother brought him from her work and that he decided to keep in an emergency until he was suddenly interrupted.

And as was customary, a group of children approached Doryoku to annoy him, something that he still did not understand why.

"Hey quirkless-san, how have you been?, I'm sure you're still as useless as ever" said a boy with brown hair and red eyes while his followers laughed mockingly.

"Congratulations, you humiliated me and now you're better, have a cookie" Doryoku said indifferently and offering his chocolate cookie to the boy.

"Ohh, thank you useless" said the brown boy taking the cookie and leaving with his group.

'I didn't think that would work' Doryoku thought with blank eyes and in disbelief.

'I guess there goes the only food I had' Doryoku thought as his stomach continued to complain from hunger.

Doryoku settled back and closed his eyes using his backpack as a pillow until a voice snapped him out of his break.

"Hey!, are you asleep?" said a voice that for some reason was already beginning to annoy Doryoku.

'Hell, I don't have any more cookies' Doryoku thought a little distressed and turning to see the person.

"If I was asleep I couldn't answer you" Doryoku said turning to see another possible bully with his face of common boredom.

Turning around, Doryoku could see another boy with white hair with hints of light blue and gravity defying, who was grinning widely and actually annoying him just by looking at him for some reason.

"So if you're awake, how are you?" the boy said energetically to which Doryoku could only have a little nervous sweat at his enthusiasm.

"Where does the enthusiasm come from?" Doryoku asked not quite understanding why this particular child was so strange.

"I don't know, I just feel like this all the time!" the boy said shrugging his shoulders with a big smile on his face.

'I'm almost sure that he suffers from some disorder' Doryoku thought seeing the happy idiot face that the boy had all the time.

"Why did you approach me specifically?" Doryoku asked calmly as he pointed to himself trying to understand the boy's reasons.

"Well, you seemed lonely so I came to accompany you" said the blue-white haired boy with a thoughtful tone.

'I still don't understand' Doryoku thought meeting the first person he hadn't understood in a long time.

"Hey, why are you here alone?" the blue haired boy asked Doryoku curiously.

"I'm a 'quirkless', so you could say I'm not very popular" said Doryoku making quotes on the quirkless part with an impassive and calm tone.

"A quirkless? It was that of not having quirk, right?" said the blue haired boy with a thoughtful and curious tone.

"How do you normally have fun?" asked the boy, suddenly leaving the subject aside causing Doryoku to have a vein on his forehead.

'I don't understand anything' Doryoku thought with a bit of annoyance at the child's unpredictable attitude.

"Listen, I'll say it slowly, why do you want to learn more about me?" Doryoku said slowly losing patience at his lack of understanding.

"Well, you could be my best friend, so it would be best to try right?" the boy said in a thoughtful and innocent tone.

Doryoku decided to give up on trying to understand the boy in front of him and sighed heavily and then just go with the flow.

"Do you like superheroes?" Doryoku asked giving up and looking for a common topic of conversation.

"Sure! My favorite is the hero Gran Torino! He is very cool!" the blue haired boy said with excitement and admiration, taking Doryoku by surprise.

"I know right? Did you see the robbery he stopped last week?" Doryoku said remembering that news with admiration as well.

"I saw it! He used the fire of one of the villains and launched it towards the other villains! It was great!" said the blue haired boy quite excited as Doryoku nodded in approval.

They both kept talking about the exploits of Gran Torino, until the blue haired boy's stomach began to rumble in protest.

"Ugh, it's time to eat" said the blue haired boy as he rummaged through his blue backpack for his food.

Seeing the boy's backpack, Doryoku could see that it was quite pretty as well as having various superhero ornaments that he liked, causing him to open his eyes a bit surprised.

"Do you want one?" the blue haired boy said as he offered an Onigiri to Doryoku.

"Don't worry, I can last until I get home" Doryoku said flatly refusing even though his stomach was still complaining in protest.

"Eat it!" the blue haired boy said seriously as he brought the Onigiri closer to Doryoku's face sharply

"I already told you no! I can last until I get home!" Doryoku said with blank eyes as he stopped the boy's hand with his left hand.

"Eat it or I'll make it go through your nose!" the boy said in a warning tone as he formed clouds from his body to hold Doryoku.

"Okay, okay! Don't put that close to my nose!" Doryoku said giving up and making the boy smile victoriously and then take an Onigiri.

'This has to be some kind of new form of bullying' Doryoku thought as he ate the Onigiri with blank eyes.

"Hey, what is your name by the way?" Doryoku asked as he continued to eat and chew slowly.

"Ohoro shikumaro" said the boy while his mouth was full of Onigiris and he seemed to be choking.

"Don't talk with your mouth full, you piece of idiot!" Doryoku said with white eyes as he slapped him on the back to help him pass the food.

The blue haired boy finished swallowing and took a deep breath to then say.

"Oboro Shirakumo! Nice to meet you!" said the boy now known as Oboro, with a big smile.

"My name is Doryoku Suzuki, my pleasure Shirakumo-san" Doryoku said cordially as he extended his hand towards him.

"You can call me Oboro! I decided that you will be my best friend!" Oboro said excitedly as he pointed at Doryoku taking him by surprise.

"That isn't how the friendships work Shirakumo-san" Doryoku said with a bead of sweat on the back of his neck and looking at him as if he were an idiot.

"I'm Oboro! And you are good Doryoku! Let's be friends!" Oboro said happily and squeezing Doryoku's hand with determination.

Doryoku seemed quite confused again by the attitude of the boy in front of him, and he could only manage to say.

"Why are you taking so much trouble just to be my friend?" Doryoku asked confused and trying to get an answer from Oboro.

"Make people happy and see their smiles! For me there is nothing better than that and you seem to have forgotten how to smile! So I will be your friend to make you smile!" Oboro said with determination and a big smile making Doryoku smile slightly.

"Then it will be my pleasure to be your friend, Oboro" Doryoku said smiling slightly after a long time with someone other than his mother.

"Good Doryoku! We will be the best of friends!" Oboro said with an excited tone and a big smile.

There was something in that child that Doryoku had lost and wanted to learn from him, that glow he had before the awakening of his quirk.

That day Doryoku could not understand the child, but if he could interpret what he was missing.

He called it 'the art of making others smile', that which he had lost and that he could only learn from someone like Oboro.

After breakfast, Doryoku continued with his classes normally until the exit, in which Oboro was waiting for him at the entrance of the school.

"Doryoku! Where do you live?" asked Oboro with curiosity and anticipation.

"I have to take the train and go south, then walk a couple of streets east and I would get home" Doryoku said thoughtfully as Oboro seemed to struggle to remember how his way home was like.

In the end, it turned out that Oboro lived a couple of streets away from Doryoku, so they both went the same way home.

Doryoku realized that the way home was more entertaining than before, just as it was before everything happened which made him quite happy.

Apparently Oboro's unintelligible attitude towards Doryoku made him unable to focus too much and being able to enjoy the little and simple things again.

Oboro and Doryoku got off the train and walked home while talking to each other.

Upon reaching his home, Doryoku said goodbye to Oboro who had to walk a little more and entered his home.

"I'm here Okā-chan!" Doryoku said knocking on the door of his house to get the attention of his mother.

After a moment, the door opened showing his mother that was very worried but also angry.

"Doryoku Suzuki, you left home without notifying me and without having breakfast, you better have a good excuse" said Doryoku's mother with an angry and quite annoyed tone.

Seeing his mother like this, Doryoku tensed and freaked out a bit but decided to tell the truth.

"I-I didn't want to wake you up Okā-chan, sorry if I made you worry" Doryoku said apologetically and quite sorry.

Doryoku's mother could only sigh at her son's response and say.

"I can't get mad at you Dory-chan, everything you do is cuter than bad" said Doryoku's mother as she pressed his cheeks lovingly.

"Come, you must be hungry after going all morning without eating, I'll have to teach you how to cook so that at least you don't leave without eating" said Doryoku's mother with a thoughtful tone causing him to enter the house to help prepare the meal.

"Actually Okā-chan, today I made a friend and he forcefully gave me an Onigiri, so I'm not that hungry" Doryoku said telling his mother about his day while he helped prepare breakfast.

"A friend Dory-chan? And how was he like?" Doryoku's mother asked quite surprised and happy that her son has a friend.

"He's very strange, and I couldn't understand his actions at any time, besides, I want to learn how to make others smile like him" Doryoku said while remembering all the jokes he told just to get a smile from him.

"He seems like a great friend Dory-chan, that kind of friends are very rare, treat him well" said Doryoku's mother quite happy making him agree with understanding.

Doryoku helped his mother and spent the whole day with her, making this day one of the happiest for Doryoku since the awakening of his quirk.

And also, it was a day when Doryoku realized that there were still things that he did not understand and made him curious, making his life regain a little of the color than it has before everything.
