Capítulo 31: Fireflies

Chapter 31

His eyes were hypnotic. His face was gorgeous. His lips smiled at me like I'm the only one who could make him happy. The dream was different. I looked around as the white room faded into a floating cottage. We were seated on a fancy garden table set, face to face. It was nighttime and the fireflies were everywhere.

We were at a gazebo type floating cottage with lights hanging from different colored bottles illuminating the two of us like we were on some fantasy river cruise. If I hadn't been in that particular place, I would have thought that I've been transported into a magical realm where fairies were flying around us. But I knew it. He had brought me there a thousand times in that time of year, when the fireflies would gather on trees and even fly around humans.

My heart fluttered as memories of us drowned me. My eyes watered as I remembered him embracing me and kissing my head as he promised to love me for the rest of our lives together in the very same place. I looked at him still seated in front of me. He was wearing his hair in a loose braid. He looked so handsome in his white plain t-shirt and a pair of jogger pants.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked out of the blue.

He gave me a look of fondness, "Because I promised."

I suddenly remembered us in the same floating cottage in Bulusan lake. We were in our senior year of college, a few months before my graduation. He and his Grandma invited my family for a picnic that day. He had his hair clean cut for the first time in ages with his earring gleaming in the moonlight. He promised to take me to that place every year because I loved it so much. And it became something of a tradition for us. We'd ride his vintage scooter to visit every year thereafter, just to see the fireflies. I loved him so much.

"You stayed in Sorsogon." it was more of a remark. I was walking towards the edge of the gazebo looking at the fireflies flying around in groups. It was as beautiful as I remembered it. I never had the strength to visit again after he died. I couldn't step in this place without him. It was our place.

I heard him walking from behind me. "It has its odd ways of making me remember." He stood beside me looking afar. "I found my scooter." he mused with a smile playing on his lips. "And it brought me here today."

I chuckled, "and here I thought that vampires like to travel fast." I glanced at him and what I saw made my heart flutter. He's always blown me away. And even in his vampiric state, all I could see was beauty in him.

He looked my way, blue eyes piercing through my soul. "For you my love, I would always take things slow." He then smiled genuinely. "I missed you." I could feel my cheeks burning up.

I looked down, embarrassed. I missed him too. I wanted to say that, but I willfully kept my mouth mum. I heard him sigh and he walked away from me, which made me abruptly look towards his direction. He already had his back on me going towards the table set we were sitting on.

He took a mobile phone from his pocket and began tapping on it. Suddenly music started playing. The guitar instrumental intro with the singer's humming made me gasp. I covered my gaping mouth with my fingers. It was our song playing. He remembered our song.

As the first verse was sung by the singer, he held out his right hand, "Can I have this dance?" He looked at me with expectant eyes, one I can never say no to. I took his hand and he immediately closed the gap between us. We started dancing to the rhythm of the song. As fireflies floated around us like twinkling stars, he rested his chin on my head. "They always say that my girlfriend is odd for being so old fashioned." he murmured. "But I loved you that way. You loved classic songs. You wear baggy clothes. You kick ass. Who would want someone else?"

"I'm not odd." I huffed on his chest whilst rolling my eyes. "I just don't like loud music other people play so much." We were swaying in the music when he suddenly twirled me. He was still chuckling with my remarks as we moved to the music around the gazebo.

He made me look at him by tipping my chin up with his hand. "I love you no matter what people say." His face was illuminated by a passing firefly. His blue eyes glowed as if reflecting the light shone on it. I should have been scared of him. He's a vampire for goodness sake. But I just looked at him, mesmerized by his eye's beauty. "Baby, you're blushing," he teased.

I suddenly got conscious of my face so I just looked at his chest in front of me. He got bulkier. He's still lean, but his muscles got more defined. His chuckle filled the air as the song started its second verse. "You are always a smart ass. You know that?"

He suddenly crushed me into a bearhug. One he'd always do when he gets on my nerves. "I'm your smart ass, baby. Only to you will I be like this." I replied with a huff, which made him chuckle harder. His laughter vibrated in his chest. "I missed you, your moodiness the most."

I buried my face on his chest and inhaled. He smelled like jasmine roses. I love his scent. He smelled the same as I bid my farewell to him that day. "I should have stopped you back then." I confessed. "I should have asked you to wait, at least I could have been with you." I embraced him finally letting go of the guilty feeling I've held for far too long.
