Chapter 30

I would always dream of Xedjedy. Those dreams gave me comfort and sleep. It would always be the same. It would always be us looking at each other. Face to face inside a white room, never speaking, just looking at each other. Sometimes he would smile at me, as if telling me that I deserved to sleep peacefully every once in a while. Waking up from those dreams would make me feel well rested. If only I could dream of him every night. I missed him.

Somehow the nightmares had gone to minimum with the prescription medicine my shrink had given me. It was thanks to Xed that the facility was receiving all the necessary medical supply. Though seeing him always reminded me that these two years where the shelter was blessed with supplies should not be taken for granted. I urged Queencie to hoard as much supply as she could because we'll never know until when this would last. I was just not sure if she was listening to me. I was after all a lowlife in the shelter, just waiting to be fed.

At three weeks post cell enhancement surgery, I was hired as part of the orphanage's staff. I was still wearing a sling with my healing arm, but the kids respect me enough to listen. The military had been actively recruiting kids as young as eighteen to be part of the protective forces which would usually sentry the walls and do perimeter checks. They would not be on the front lines with the counter terror group, but we couldn't be laxed with them these days. As an Ex Military, I was tasked to train the kids with the things they would need, like spotting a tampered security camera or how to decode a password locked door. I wanted them to be ready, at least before they decided to be part of the people who were trying to protect the civilians in the shelter.

I would not stop these kids from growing up. But at least I could help them be ready for what is about to come. It would be inevitable that Xedjedy would come. He was part of the New World Order. He was being called the merciful High Emperor, of course he controls the world. But that made me wonder about the resistance. Were they vampires, or just humans like us? So many things have happened. Things that I could have never imagined.

I was looking at the sunset from my room on the second floor. I had just finished taking a shower and inspecting my left arm. I could easily move my fingers without the sudden bite of pain. Though my arm was still heavily scared from all the surgeries I've undergone. At the back of my mind I was hoping that it would be the last. I sat on the small porch's love seat swing, overlooking the orphanage's yard. Karma purred as it rubbed its body on my legs. Karma had grown to be the sweetest cat I've owned. Well, it's the only cat I've owned so I couldn't compare.

The two of us lazily lounged there as the sky changed colors. I couldn't help myself from daydreaming. A smile played on my face as I stroked Karma on its back and head.

Well, if it was up to me, I would have been married to my true love by now, perhaps even pregnant with our first child. I would have been sitting in their viranda waiting for him to arrive for dinner, looking at the same sunset tainting the skies with orange and purples.

I would have been having that pregnancy glow as I played with Karma. Soon, Xed would arrive home driving a car he saved up for before we got married. We would kiss and he would murmur endearing words to my round belly, our baby. Dinner would have been waiting at the stove still hot as his granny would have prepared the table already. The three of us would have been so happy.

I sighed. If only he hadn't left, would things be different? Those things haunted my mind as the skies slowly darkened. The stars started emerging into the night sky, as the crickets started their night time serenade. I stayed there for a little while longer, until I found myself once again in that white room looking at him with his translucent blue vampiric eyes.
