In his somewhat frantic voice, Ariel told Ryder to ask Gabriel where his mother Jules Carter currently was. 

Ryder refused Ariel's request at first because he didn't want to do it without knowing the reason. Besides, it would only make him look stupid and weird as hell for asking such a question out of nowhere.
