"You don't have to take off just because I'm leaving," Dani told him over dinner a few days later. "I'll just be gone over the weekend. You guys are busy, and I know you aren't going to throw some wild party."

"I don't know."

Nate had been more standoffish recently. "Did I do something wrong?" she asked, not beating around the bush.

"What? Why do you think that?"

"Because you're always in your room, and you seem to think that because I'm going to be gone, you have to pack up and leave. I'm wondering what I did so I can fix it."

Nate set his fork down and folded his hands in his lap. He couldn't even look at her when he said, "There's nothing wrong."

"Do you even believe that? Look, I don't know what I did, but can we start over?"
