Capítulo 6: Chapter 6
Alice woke up with a big yawn. She didn't dream last night. Reasonable, she supposed. After all, it would be weird for an incarnation of the Dream to dream. Nonetheless, she was quite refreshed after the incidents of yesterday. And she tried really hard to not think about that creature, and she couldn't.
'At least, it is somewhat benevolent,' she guessed. After all, it did give her something she needed. It saved her a lot of trouble of finding if magic exists in this world, and if it did find something to teach herself Runecraft and if it didn't, she would have to travel off-world which she didn't have a lot of confidence in herself. She may be strong, but the multiverse is entirely another beast. Not to mention the adjacent dimensions where there were beings filled with malice that she could accidentally slip into, she would also have to worry about Ophis, Miss Peace and Silence. All in all not good.
Now, this creature just gave her what she wanted and somehow knew what she wanted. Now, she thought about it, how did it know about her? She didn't even move too overtly. And what did it say about itself? Deus Ex Machina? Neither she nor Great Red knew about the creatures like that with that name. Well, that name she knew to be fair. It was used in play when-..... Oh…. Oh. Wait, what?
Alice sighed. Everything was so worrying. She felt like she had lost that sense of control she had when she first awakened. Now, she just felt tired. She decided to accept it and went along with the flow. Ultimately, things are out of her hands now. So, it couldn't be helped. What she could do now is to train better to control her power. Even in the hierarchy of the multiverse, she was already at the top of the top just by being what she was. There are few things above her. So, what she should do now is to learn and refine herself. She picked up the book and opened it.
'Let's start with this'.
"Runes are said to be symbols derived from concepts of reality itself. In a way, these symbols when imbued with energy are akin to building blocks of the universe. The art of utilising these symbols or arrays of symbols to influence the world around us is called Runecraft….."
'Yada Yada,' Alice skipped the uninteresting parts and directly skipped toward Runes and Enhancements. After memorising the contents, she closed the book and wrote a symbol on the dirt. She infused ether with the symbol, and a dirt spear shot up from it. She smirked. Finally, she can do more complex things than create something like an unbreakable club and beat her Foes half-dead.
First thing first, she freshened up herself. And then, she set off toward the city. She had a good feeling for today and was kinda feeling happy with a new toy in the arsenal. Alice believed that she should test things. Etching a floating rune on her armour and vector runes on her gauntlets and boots, she flew. Alice didn't actually need the runes to fly, but this was a test. Besides, her original method of flying wasn't really flying, but more like drifting. She just made herself closer to the property of Dream and floated away with the wind.
Alice idly wondered whether she should wear a cape or not. She believed a cape would go well in this type of armour.
'Maybe that was a bit on the nose,' she thought as she dispelled that thought. She was scouring the city but still hasn't been able to find an act of crime aside from some gang members prancing around, but since they weren't committing a crime, she wasn't inclined to bother them. She needed an enemy she could test runes on, not punching bags. As she was searching, a big explosion came from the direction of Lord Street market. As soon as she heard that, she immediately poured more energy into her runes and bolted there. Alice believed she even broke a sound barrier or two. Arriving at the scene, Alice looked at what the fun was about and found that it was Merchant. Mush and Squealer with a bunch of crack heads to be precise. Joy.
Mush was rampaging across the street, knocking down the stalls, and a bunch of mobs were taking everything they could from the stalls. Alice stretched out her hands and air shimmered in front of it as a new rune was formed. Directing a large amount of energy into it, the rune transformed into an enormous fireball, roughly the size of a basketball. Some more energy was directed, and the ball became denser and turned blue. This sort of thing, if not it was her doing this, would be considered a great waste of energy. There are certain arrays of runes that could achieve the same thing with less energy, but since she has a limitless amount of energy at her disposal, it was convenient. With a great roar, the fireball soared through the fire toward Mush. The trash golem brought tendrils of trash to protect itself. The ball exploded in a flash of flame and heat as soon as it made contact with Mush, vaporising all the trash in that tendril and liquifying trash near it, and the subsequent explosion sent Mush flying across the street right straight into a building. Alice hoped all the citizens inside that building were already evacuated. Though, Mush wouldn't be in fighting condition anytime soon if he wasn't already dead. Alice had to admit she went overboard with that.
'But hey, trial and error, right?' She thought to herself. She had already memorised most individual runes. Now, it is time to practise its applications. A roaring sound attracted her attention. In the corner of her peripheral vision, a missile came rushing toward her.
'What the frog? Where? Oh right, squealer,' Alice remembered about the vehicle tinker now. Alice decided she really admired the tinkers now. The missiles coming toward her were by no means beautiful. Yet, even as some places were rusting, and the design was haphazard at best, it still managed to work. How? Alice could only answer in Earth Bet term, tinker bullshit.
The missile hit her, and with a rush of heat and force came the explosion. Just before it hit her, Alice managed to modify her armour to include the rune of heaviness on it and provided it with as much energy as it could handle without a cataclysmic failure. After the explosion, she immediately changed back. She was maybe able to control her armour with her mind, but an extra wave wasn't something she needed, except maybe as an attack. Crafting a rune of lightness on her armour. She created a sword etched with a sharpness rune and a rune of lightness. She successfully created it. However, as soon as she provided the rune with energy, it exploded.
'Wah?' was her thought as she was blasted backwards from the backlash. In hindsight, she shouldn't have skipped the warnings, especially with it lined three times underneath with a note that said 'very important, don't skip'. Oh well, she could take this. She immediately recovered with her armour looking as good as ever. There wasn't even a scratch.
She once again created the sword. This time only with a rune of sharpness. Meanwhile, Squealer wasn't exactly idle, or the rest of the Merchant for that matter. They had been blindly shooting in her general direction. She configured her armour and this time with two extra wings on the back. They looked like bird wings. Each feather was independent of the others. She hoped it worked as she etched each armour with vector runes. Then, her armour with a rune of lightness, and she was ready. She crouched and brought the sword to the front of her in a tilted angle. She powered her runes and in a swirling coloured she rushed forward uncontrollably. When she stopped at the other side, Squealer's monstrosity was already slashed in half.
