Our travels took longer than expected. It took us an entire month to reach the end of Sea Dragon Point from the village. I can already imagine how long it would take with the others. We are Nords so the cold doesn't bother us. We are also used to cross country travels, so we can traverse large areas of land with frightening efficiency.
After making it to the shore we got a good look at the land. The peninsula that forms the point is rather flat, and filled with trees. The coast is fine as it is and even now I could envision the port city in my mind's eye. There was plenty of room to build. If you go further inland, the wolfwoods begin providing us with plenty of wood. Towards the south west is a stretch of hills and a bit east of that is mountains.
"What do you think?" I asked.
"It has potential." Ivar replied.
"It will do." Aela replied.
"Can you not see the possibilities? We could build the castle on the peninsula, and have the city grow outward. Those hills can be flattened and made into farmland. The soil is rich enough, well the cold will be an issue. But we are Nords, the cold has never stopped us before." I said with passion.
"We get it Ragnar, this place has potential. So, where do we begin?" Ivar asked.
"As I said, we can build the city out from the castle. I think we should figure out where we want to set our base." I said.
"Why not at the edge of the peninsula?" Aela asked.
"Yes, that was what I was thinking." I replied.
"Why not build a tower instead of a castle?" Ivar asked and Aela and I turned to regard him with curiosity.
"Do you think a tower would work best? I was thinking more along the lines of a magnificent castle." I replied.
"I think a tower would be better. We are Nords, we many no longer be on skyrim, but that doesn't mean we can't create our own throat of the world. Granted a much, much smaller one." He finished.
"If it's small, then it has no use." Aela added and Ivar couldn't help but snicker at her choice of words.
"Focus, Ivar." I warned him.
"Sorry, sorry, I just had to clear my throat." He said.
I stopped to think about Ivar's idea. If I remember correctly, there is a house named after a tower. Hightower was it, their seat of power is a tower. They also have a port city, which happens to be the largest city in Westeros. The more I think about it, the more I begin to like the idea.
"Ivar, I think you're right. A tower would fit us well. Though it can't be simple, it must be grand. Enough to draw attention. Enough to make people want to make the cold journey just to see it." I said while stretching my arms out wide.
"That's all well and good, but where will we get the manpower to build such a marvel?" Aela asked with her hands on her hips.
"She has a point, we have what, fifty people. We can't really accomplish much with that." Ivar added.
"I have a plan for that." I said.
"Care to share what that plan is?" Aela asked when I didn't immediately share my plans.
"We will continually entice people from the north to migrate, and those from the south as well. But I have an idea to draw even more people. I mean, it's not like they particularly like their current home. Or else they wouldn't continuously try to cross over." I said while looking north.
"And who might that be?" She asked.
"I believe they call them wildlings." I said with a smile on my face.
After spending a few more hours talking about our future, darkness soon fell. We made camp and called it a day. The next morning, we headed back to the village. The travel back was much faster and we were back in the village in no time.
Once we returned, I broke the news to everyone about the journey we would have to make. There were a few who wanted to know why we even had to move. Those were the people who made homes in the village. I gave them the choice to stay, but that I would not wait for them. Those who sought opportunity would follow me.
It didn't take long to get everyone on the same page after that. We immediately began our preparations to travel. I decided to leave the managing of the convoy to Ivar. I, along with Gentle and Gunnar made our way back to sea dragon point. They were peeved at having to stay at the village for so long and insisted on coming along. I didn't mind, at least this way I would have protection for what I was about to do.
"So this is it?" Gentle asked.
"It is, what do you think?" I asked the two.
"👏✊👈💪" Gunnar signed and I nodded at his reply.
"It has potential, where do you plan to build that tower Ivar was rambling on about?" Gentle asked.
"At the very end of the peninsula." I replied.
"Seems good to me. Now, what is it that you plan to do that we had to leave ahead of the others?" Gentle asked.
"I want to meditate on that mountain up there." I said while pointing at the mountains in the distance.
"Meditate, what for?" Gentle asked while tilting his head in confusion.
"I feel out of balance, it might be due to our unexpected arrival in this world. Even you yourself said it, Gentle, I seem off, different." I said and this caught the attention of the both of them.
"I won't deny it, I much prefer the old you. If you think this will help in some way, then by all means let's get climbing." Gentle replied with enthusiasm.
"👍👋👊🙏👈👌" Gunnar signed with excitement.
"Don't get your hopes up, I won't ever be the same as I once was. But I hope this will fix the issues I've been having as of late. There might be a slight personality change, but I doubt it'll be anything drastic." I added.
"Well, I suppose that's good enough." Gentle replied with slumped shoulders. Gunnar walked up to him and patted him on the back while signing at us.
"🤝👈👉🤞🤙💪🙏" He smiled at the end and we couldn't help but smile in kind.
"Let's get a move on then, I don't know how long this will take, so we should move as fast as possible." I said and turned to leave.
"Alright alright, don't you worry one bit. Gunnar and I will make sure nothing disturbs you, though I wouldn't be adverse to someone trying. My axe hasn't been wetted in a while." Gentle said as he and Gunnar followed behind me.
"😤👊👊💪" Gunnar signed.
"Yes yes, just hurry, I don't want to waste anymore time." I said and we made our way up the mountain.
It took us three days to reach the top. Mainly due to the fact that there was no path up. We had to climb most of the way and it wasn't easy. Once near the peak, on a flattened area we stopped. We were so high up that clouds blocked most of our sight. And the cold, if anyone else had tried to climb up, they would have frozen to death.
Not wanting to waste anymore time I walked near the edge and sat in a comfortable position. I closed my eyes and calmed my breathing. The winds whipped my clothes and hair. I ignored it all, so focused was I. I delved deep into my subconsciousness and the world lost all sound and color. I felt for the power deep within, I felt for my soul. And once I reached a state where I could visualize what I sought, I smiled. It was time to begin.
So the emoji was a fun way for me to include Gunnar in the dialogue. I realized that he was just standing there most of the time so I figured this could work. I found this in another fanfic called “my mother told me”, it’s a Vikings TV show fanfic. I liked the way he used it so I thought to try it out. Let me know if you like it or not. Also, do you guys want a time skip? Or do you want to experience the entire building process? Let me know. Y’all know what to do, leave a comment and or review.
