"I sense wells of potential in you, young man," the Hermit said to Sonic, as Sonic offered the Red Seed of Power to him. "This seed will grant you enormous strength, are you sure you want to go through with this?"
"Yeah, I'm sure," Sonic replied, Yari looking on from behind him.
"Absolutely sure? As of right now, you have the virtues of an innocent child with smooth skin and a pure mind. Should I share this seed's juice with you, entities beyond our comprehension will become aware of you. Your heart will grow hollow and cold," the Hermit clarified. Sonic nodded. "This power will lead you down a path of great suffering, should you ever decide in the future that a warrior's road is one you don't want to take, you will find that you can never go back." Sonic handed the seed to the Hermit.
"You mean Giganto, right? Kinda too late," Sonic replied. The Hermit lifted a mossy eyebrow. "I'll need this power to fight him. He may have almost killed me three times over now." The Hermit laughed hoarsely, before biting into the seed with a mouth like a nutcracker's. The juice splashed all over Sonic. He clenched his fists, absorbing the blood-red juice like lotion. His muscles tightened. "Thanks, Hermit. I needed that!" The Hermit stared at Sonic's smile. The naive light in his eyes as it flickered a little.
"I'm so sorry," the Hermit replied, his mouth agape.
Sonic and Yari returned to the slab. It was covered in ice, stuck to the ground. "Care to do the honors?" Sonic asked. Yari knelt down and sliced the ice away from the bottom of the slab. They grabbed both sides of the slab…
And lifted it up.
They carried the piece of ancient stone to the site of the house under the setting sun. "So, why didn't we cut it into smaller pieces before?" Sonic grunted as he placed the stone down by where the front door was going. Like Yari had requested. SLAM! "What are we using it for, at that?" He looked to the faded sketch in the dirt that Yari had created days before. "The walls? The floor? Maybe the ceiling?" Yari looked to him strangely.
"The porch," she replied. Sonic cocked his head.
"Why do we need a porch?" Sonic asked, squinting.
"This isn't just a roof over our heads, Sonic," Yari said, smiling slightly. "This is our home." Sonic looked to Cronus Cove. "We need to have a place where we can be outdoors AND at home."
"I only wanted a roof over my head, though. It's not like I'm gonna grow old and die here. Why do we need a home? Why here?" Sonic asked.
"You don't," Sage mumbled. Sonic and Yari turned to her, she was holding Pebble in both arms. "Giganto will awaken to destroy everything you're ever going to build. This is pointless. It will end in tragedy as everything else does." Sonic and Yari looked at one another once more, a feeling of dread setting in.
After yet another day of building, Sonic sat at the base of the porch, half-awake and staring off at nothing. It had been a while since he had run around the island, most of his time doing so was consumed by searching for materials. Yari had gone off a few hours ago to gather dinner from Big's old farm, leaving Sonic alone. She didn't usually take this long. He nervously looked around Kronos Field from his homestead.
"I hAte yoUuuu," a glitched electronic voice said, slowly trailing off into silence. Sonic instantly sat up, looking all around.
"I know, Sage…" Sonic said, letting his head fall back onto the porch. He looked up to the sky, and saw no stars.
"YoU'Reee nOt my SoniC." His relaxed eyes opened completely, his warm state of relaxation finally broke. And then the stars returned one by one.
"Sonic! Is everything all right?" Yari asked, running over to Sonic as he hyperventilated. "Another night terror?" Sonic held his scarred abdomen, and exhaled.
"Heh. Yeah, looks like I Cyberspaced out," Sonic wheezed. He got up.
"We should go for a run, clear your head," Yari offered with a smile, calmly holding an arm to the teardrop medallion on her chest.
"Great idea!" Sonic exclaimed. He looked all around, before his eyes landed on a red mass of metal in the distance. "Hey… that wasn't there before." Sonic and Yari spotted a strange symbol on the side of the machine. "Well, it's definitely not Fallen Star tech. Even when they built Giganto, they were at least modest enough not to plaster a face on it. Ah, whatever. Last one there's a rotten egg!" Sonic sprinted towards it.
"Wait, Sonic… be careful!" Yari ran after him.
"Careful?" Sonic laughed. "Where's the fun in that?"
…
Yari arrived at the metal capsule, only to see Sonic peering through the ajar door. "What is it?" She asked. Sonic put a finger to his mouth. Yari joined him in looking into the capsule. Sage was standing inside with some strange, tall creature in an office chair. It was made of water held together by a metal helmet and what seemed to be RED-CODE.
"Tell me your name, Artificial Ancient," Sage said, holding the water creature's hand in her own. Its fingers curled around her hand in a jerky motion.
"I am… I am the… what I am," the Artificial Ancient said, as if it was trying to remember its own name.
"Come on, I know you can do it," Sage pleaded, putting her hand on the Artificial Ancient and injecting some RED-CODE into its chest. It shook and convulsed as if it was a victim of the electric chair. "Don't be scared, this will only hurt a little bit."
"Wake up."
The Artificial Ancient exploded into little droplets of water. It splashed onto the sticky notes placed all over the walls. Sage looked around the room, every last one of the instructions ruined. Then, her eyes landed on Sonic and Yari. After jolting back in shock, Sage disappeared.
Sonic stepped into the capsule, the bunker. The floor was wet and slippery. Sonic pushed the office chair, and realized its wheels couldn't roll. Sonic gazed all around the interior. All the notes were written in faded cursive letters, except for the last one. It was placed relatively far away from the rest. He knelt down to read the note. The handwriting was pristine, perfect, squared… almost as if it was written by a robot.
"BUCKET LIST."
…
"GET DAD BACK."
Sonic frowned, backing away from the note. He exited the capsule, running all the way back home.
