Capítulo 6: Unexpected Meeting
To solve his problems, Renaldo immediately went to his grandfather who spoils him a lot to the point that he is even willing to give a lot of money to Renaldo when Renaldo as a child tried to ask for some spare change to buy some wooden toys(To act like a child) when he saw a toymaker's shop in the plaza.
Renaldo quickly ordered his guardian to prepare a carriage towards his grandfather's estate
At the estate, Renaldo went to his grandfather's study to talk to him but the way in was barred by a guard holding a bayonet to block the door.
"I'm sorry young master, but the patriarch is talking with someone important about your family's tobacco business and he ordered us not to let anyone disturb them at this crucial time, please understand my predicament" said the guard, clearly in a pinch as he respects the young master because the young master has treated everyone fairly despite his clear higher status.
Renaldo on the other hand just shrugged it off and said; "It's okay, don't be nervous, I can wait at the asotea, please tell lolo when he's done that I am here and that I have something to ask of him, and by the way, keep up the good work!" smiled Renaldo.
The guard, clearly relieved just nodded and let Renaldo be on his way.
Renaldo made his way to the general library first to get some books to read and then when he got what he wanted, he went to the asotea to pass some time while waiting for his lolo's affairs to be done.
While reading the book, Renaldo noticed someone approaching him, he ignored the person and just continued immersing himself with one of his favorite books from his past life til now, which is Machiavelli's The Prince, a political science book, this book helped him a lot in his past life as it taught him a lot about political philosophies which he used to navigate his way through the murky politics of his past life, it isn't easy to become a general in one of the most corrupt countries in the world and this book became his sole lifeline, especially the chapter about cruelty and mercy, he applied its lines to the T and the quote of Machiavelli that says "Men worry less about doing an injury to one who makes himself loved than to one who makes himself feared." this specific quote helped him a lot when it comes to knowing when to attack those people that have bad intentions for him and when to protect those he deemed important.
As he was immersed in nostalgia and reading, a kid his age and a 17 yr. old teenager approached him, the younger one is really enthusiastic as he disrupted Renaldo's activity, Renaldo, clearly annoyed glared at the kid and moved further away to continue reading his book, this earned the ire of both people as they felt insulted as the other party vehemently ignored and avoided them like the plague.
"Oy! Kid! Why are you ignoring us?!" said the older person, as he also felt insulted, as a teenager, kids around the age of this one always flock around him like moths to any source of light because they see him as a cool adult, especially when they tell them stories about how he became a sailor by enrolling at the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy and when he shows them his illustrations and paintings he learned from the Academy of Fine Arts here in Manila, they always fawn over an "adult" like him which gave him some kind of superiority complex around those younger than him.
On the other hand, his younger brother seems like a kid denied by his mother to play outside, on the verge of crying with some tears almost falling from his eyes, the kid mustered up his courage one last time and tried to approach the other kid.
The kid approached Renaldo, nervously, saying;
"Ummm, excuse me but can we share this table with you? I know that I overstepped my boundaries but I didn't mean it as I was just excited because it is my first time seeing someone my age in this place that is of equal status, I don't have anything against those orphans or anything but they seem to be afraid of me every time I approach them so I was happy when I saw you, I-I thought I was going to have somebody to play or talk with...."
Renaldo, still angry but understood the other kid's predicament said;
"I understand and I don't hold it against you, I just got a bit angry as this is my favorite bo-"
He was interrupted by the teenage kid who glared at him and said;
"Don't pretend that you understand that book completely, you're probably just pretending to get other people's attention because that book is clearly for people around my age!" The haughty teenager harrumphed
Renaldo on the other hand just ignored the teenager as he continued to talk with the younger one and said;
"Did you hear something? I thought I was hearing some trash speaking to me about not understanding this book I'm reading, I didn't think there are trashcan ghosts here!" Renaldo said in a mocking tone.
The younger kid chuckled, clearly amused by this kid's rhetorics and his bravery, he loves his big brother and idolizes him a lot for he is really smart but this kid is really funny and entertaining to talk to that the kid got swayed to his side immediately.
Seeing both kids younger than him laugh and mock him, the teenager stormed his way outside as he couldn't bear the humiliation that he feels at the moment.
Renaldo, please with what happened continued talking with the kid, and as they talked, they both realized that they have a lot of similarities to each other, with the way they are both big fans of military stuff and reading books, as he discovered that the kid's favorite book is the Doctrina Christiana, the very first book that is believed to be printed in the Philippines.
After knowing this and remembering that older brother of this kid's, something clicked in Renaldo's mind, it's vague but he thinks that he knows someone from his past life that is completely like this kid, but he can't seem to guess it properly so he asked the kid his name
The kid then said
"Oh, I'm sorry! It's my lack of manners that led to this, my name is Antonio and that is my older brother, Juan!
Renaldo then connected the dots, and concluded something, he widened his eyes and remembered someone important that shocked him to the core!
