Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 333. You're Not Fooling Anyone

Angel glanced at him, raising an eyebrow. "Something funny, Cley?"

Cley tried to stifle his grin, but the amusement in his eyes was impossible to miss. "No, nothing, Your Majesty," he replied, though his voice betrayed him.

Angel didn't need to press him to know what was going on in his aide's mind. "Then why are you laughing?" Angel asked, his tone calm but with the faintest hint of irritation. He knew exactly what Cley was thinking, and the effort Cley was putting into maintaining his composure only made it worse.

Cley shifted in his chair, finally letting out a small laugh as he shook his head. "I just remembered something funny from this morning," he said, his tone light and casual.

Angel narrowed his eyes, giving him a flat stare. "You're not fooling anyone. We both know what you're really laughing about."

Cley raised his hands in surrender, still smiling but now looking a bit sheepish. "Alright, fine," he admitted. "It's just… I've never seen you so rattled, Your Majesty. And over something like this? It's just… unexpected."

Angel sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose again. "This is going to be gossip for sure," he muttered, more to himself than to Cley. "Don't make it worse."

Cley quickly adopted a more serious expression, though there was still a glimmer of humor in his eyes. "Got it," he said, though his tone suggested that the damage might already have been done. "But… I can tell Claire, right? You know she'll ask, and she'll find out anyway."

Angel sighed again, realizing there was no point in arguing. Cley and Claire were inseparable, and there were few secrets between them. Trying to keep anything from Claire would be a losing battle. He might as well allow Cley to share the news, but he had to set limits.

"Fine," Angel said, waving a hand dismissively. "But don't make it sound worse than it is. We don't need this spiraling out of control."

Cley nodded, looking as if he had just been handed a great treasure. "I'll keep it subtle," he promised, though Angel had his doubts about what Cley considered "subtle."

Angel sat back in his chair, trying to push the awkward conversation with Sarah out of his mind. He needed to focus on the work in front of him, and Cley's teasing wasn't helping. Quickly, he settled into the routine of reviewing documents and attending to his duties. 'I hope she can handle this,' he thought, imagining how Sarah might confront her with the same bluntness she had shown him. The thought of Rose's probable embarrassment made him grimace. He could almost see her flustered expression in his mind's eye.

Meanwhile, across the castle, Rose was in her room, getting ready for the celebration of a noble's newborn—a small gathering, but one of importance, and something that required her presence. She was just fastening her earrings when there was a knock at the door.

"Come in," Rose called out, expecting one of her maids. To her surprise, it was Sarah.

"Good morning, Your Highness," Sarah said, entering with a respectful bow.

Rose smiled politely, though she couldn't help but notice the slightly awkward tension. "Good morning, Sarah. Is everything alright?"

Sarah hesitated for a moment, clearly thinking through how to phrase what she wanted to say. "I wanted to check on you after last night, Your Highness. To see how you're feeling."

Rose's smile faltered for a second, a blush rising to her cheeks as she realized what Sarah was referring to. She quickly turned back to the mirror, adjusting her hair to avoid meeting the older woman's eyes. "I'm fine, thank you. It's nothing to worry about."

Sarah nodded, though she didn't seem entirely convinced. "I see… but I wanted to mention, we noticed some blood on the sheets this morning."

Rose froze, her hands stilling mid-motion. 'Oh no…' The mortification hit her instantly. She hadn't thought about the practicalities of what had happened the night before, let alone the fact that the staff would undoubtedly notice the traces left behind. She swallowed, trying to maintain her composure. "Ah… yes. That's… normal."

"Of course, Your Highness," Sarah said, her tone matter-of-fact. "But I wanted to see if you needed anything—some herbal remedies, perhaps? A warm compress for any discomfort? It's uncommon to bleed after the first time."
