"What does it mean?"
"Centuries ago, it was believed our after-life starts when we become a vampire—"
Cutting him off, Ivan asked, "You mean their past life was when they were humans?" When Jason nodded his head, he added, "Then what about someone who was never a human like—"
"Us? We are claimed not to have a past or after life. We are said to be living in the present because we were born with it. But it's not the same for everyone. Though our community is growing, we still have many vampires who were humans at some point," he explained in the simplest way he could.
"Then what is this after-life effect?"
"It is said when you meet people and feel a sudden sense of familiarity and warmth but that is the first time you are meeting them, it is called the after-life effect. It means that either you have met that person in your past life or that person is closely related to someone you know from the past."
When Ivan frowned, Jason quickly added, "But it might not be the same for humans. I mean, this is just one of the concepts that we are taught."
Thinking for a while, he asked, "So do you think I might have met her before?"
"Maybe, maybe not."
Slumping on the couch, Ivan closed his eyes and sighed. He couldn't stop thinking about the incident and Jason's explanation just made it worse.
"Do you think I might have a past life?" Without waiting for his reply, he explained, "Since both my parents were not humans when I was born, I don't have a past life, right?"
Shrugging his shoulders, Jason hesitated for a while before answering, "Well, that is hard to say. According to the theories, I will never have a past life because I was never a human but if you ever become a vampire, you will have one because you are a human now."
Glancing at the watch, he got up and added, "I need to leave, I'll see you later."
"Jason—"
He stopped when Ivan called him out. "Yes?"
"Do you—" Hesitating for a while, he asked, "Do you think I will ever become one?"
"Become what?"
"Become like you people—a vampire." When Jason smiled, Ivan quickly added, "Don't get wrong ideas, I really don't want to."
"It doesn't matter whether you want it or not Ivan, it really doesn't. But if it's supposed to happen, it will happen no matter how hard you resent it." After patting his shoulder, Jason left leaving Ivan with many unanswered questions.

In the woods (Not too far away from Ivan's place)
"You don't understand, we can't—"
Cutting him off, Rachael snarled, "I don't want to understand, I just want you to watch your words in front of Ivan and that's it."
Scrunching his brows, Darius hissed, "You are trying to keep the truth away from him which is not appropriate."
"Look who is talking about being appropriate," she scoffed. "You and I both know we have crossed that line a long time back Darius." Taking a step towards him, she stated, "Why don't you just leave him alone for time and let the kid do what he wants."
"He is doing something he isn't supposed to and I will keep persuading him until—"
"Until he starts resenting you? Until he decides to drag himself away from you? That is what you want? Do you want to push him away?"
Pursing his lips, he stated, "If pushing him away will keep him safe then I am willing to do that. All I am trying to do is keep Ivan safe—"
Cutting him off, she sighed, "And we are doing it, we have been doing it for so many years and we will continue doing it without interrupting his normal life."
"You know the situation is different this time, it's more grieve and dangerous. One mistake and our brother will lose his life."
"But—"
"They are back Rachael and we both know what they want. They will do anything to make us feel vulnerable and the only person who can make us and is vulnerable right now is Ivan," he stated, making his point very clear.
