The Grand library
After leaving work early, Amber visited the library where she had plans of spending her evening.
She often went there and devoted her time trying to study ancient history and mythologies. She did so not only in an attempt to find out the reason behind the unusual activities that happened in her life but also because reading helped her to deal with all the mental pressure she was going through. It helped in calming her down and not going insane.
"Honey, the new books are in. You can check them out," Ms Huggins, the old librarian informed Amber.
"Thank you so much Ms.Huggins, you are very sweet," Amber smiled. Since she visited the library quite often, she shared a very close relationship with the librarian.
After sharing a short conversation with the librarian, she made her way towards the historic section to check out the new collection of books.
Stopping midway, she turned around when she felt someone's presence behind her. Looking around when she found no one, she shrugged it off.
Grabbing a couple of books from the shelf, Amber took a corner seat. As she was going through the content, an unexpected weird topic caught her eye.
'Myths about life and after', she muttered.
"They say books are the most important source of information but there are things that books can't explain."
Amber lifted her head when she heard a familiar voice. When the woman who had appeared out of nowhere smiled at her, she curiously asked, "I am sorry, do I know you?" Without waiting for reply, she added, "I saw you yesterday in the restaurant as well—"
Cutting her off, the woman calmly answered, "You don't know me."
Contemplating for a while, Amber hesitantly questioned her. "Yesterday—you were telling me something which I really didn't understand. C—Can you tell me what it was about? I tried looking for you yesterday but—"
"What do you want me to tell you?" When Amber frowned, the woman added, "Do you want me to tell you about the things happening in your life or how I found out about it?" Inching closer, she smiled, "Do you want me to explain why you are so different from others or—"
"How do you know that?" Amber asked in a very curious tone. She had a feeling that the woman she had been having unexpected encounters with since yesterday knew much more than she did.
"I know many things Amber—" Inching closer, she whispered, "Things you are not aware of and things you don't wanna learn about."
When Amber took a step back, she smiled, "You don't have to be scared of—" Suddenly the woman hissed in pain and sprang backwards.
"A—Are you alright?" Amber panicked when she sensed the sudden change in the woman's expression. A second ago she looked bold and fearless but now she looked paler and scared.
"You—" Looking at her hand which was slowly turning blackish-grey, the woman quickly shoved it inside her pocket.
But unfortunately, Amber did not fail to see it. "Your hand—is it okay?"
"Yes, I am fine," The woman muttered before gulping in nervousness.
"Do you want me to take you to the hospital?"
"There is no need for that—" Without waiting for her reply, the woman walked away as fast as she could and this time Amber did not follow her.
The uneasiness Amber felt at the presence of the mysterious woman immediately disappeared after she left.
Who was that woman and what did she want from Amber? Why did she keep appearing in the same places as her? Did she really know something about Amber—something that even Amber didn't?
...
Around midnight.
Arnold's Dine-in
"Amber, she saw it," Sussane whispered.
Looking around, Arnold quickly closed the door and drew the curtains together. "When?"
"Yesterday, she told me in the morning." Anxiously grabbing her husband's hand, she panicked, "Should we shut it down?"
"No, we can't do that," he disagreed.
"I told you we shouldn't have started this in the first place. Why are we taking so much risk Arnold? All I have ever wanted was a simple life with you, is that so hard to achieve?" she broke down.
Pulling her in his embrace, Arnold sighed, "After whatever we have done, this is the least we can do for them. Even though we chose a different path, we still can't deny our fate."
"You are right but what are we going to do about the corridor? We can't keep it open, it's very risky," Sussane remarked.
"I'll think of something, don't worry about it. Did you talk to Amber?" When she nodded her head, he added, "We have to be more careful. Did she tell you why she went there?"
"No she didn't. I did not ask her either to not sound suspicious but I think something happened."
"I'll look into it," Arnold stated.
