"I am here to speak with Melida."
James, Mona, and Vincent were at the Adventurer's Guild. Three days had passed, and Vincent was now back to full health.
During these three days, Mona and James had used various methods to help him remember his previous life. None of them had really led to anything, They also mentioned the A-class monster, but he had no recollection of fighting anything.
James had prohibited Mona from teaching Vincent any spells. Melida was going to help, so she should be the one drafting a development plan for him.
Mona had refrained from teaching him, but she examined his mana on various occasions.
At first, she believed that he could regenerate mana faster than others. This means that his mana limit was low, which was usually the case.
But his mana continued to replenish non-stop. Three days had passed, and his mana was still increasing in amount.
James understood her sister's dilemma. He was going to ask Melida to explain everything to her as well.
"Miss Melida will see you now."
The three of them entered the room.
Melida was standing in front of a stone ball, smiling towards the three of them.
"Welcome."
Vincent looked at the Stone ball. He felt an enormous amount of dread when it came to his notice.
"Mona, I don't feel good."
He hid behind her, still not sure why the Stone felt so familiar yet so awful. Mona looked at him and said,
"Don't worry. Grandma won't do anything to you."
She held her hand and walked towards the stone. The closer he got, the more his head started to hurt.
Melida noticed his discomfort and cast a spell around them.
"Light's Embrace."
A thin veil of light gathered around the three of them.
Vincent felt the pain disappear. His dread didn't go away, but he felt better.
"Child, what is your name?"
Mona left his hand. He walked towards the old lady and said,
"Vincent."
The stone let out a wave of mana. He was startled by it, but the lady said,
"Don't worry. That ball is just a tool. It won't hurt you."
He took a deep breath in.
"Do you know of your past?"
"No."
Another wave of mana appeared.
"Would you like to know of your calling?"
Vincent stared at her and asked,
"Calling? What is that?"
Melida smiled and said,
"The work that you are most suited for. It has already been decided from your birth."
Vincent didn't understand.
"Put your hand on the stone."
Melida raised the stone ball from its altar with magic. She put it in front of Vincent, who marveled at her actions.
"Go on."
He put his hand on the stone slowly, still wary of it.
His mana began entering the stone, and it turned transparent. At the center, a small bluish light appeared, with a red dot in its center. The light began to increase in size.
After a few minutes, the stone turned completely blue in color. The dot remained small, but it was clearly visible.
"Congratulations. You are a Hero."
He opened his eyes and looked at the ball.
Mona was happy, James remained calm, Melida looked at him and smiled.
But he felt empty. The blue color didn't give him any joy. His eyes were stuck on the small red dot.
Hero. What does that word mean?
----------------------------------------------------
After the ceremony was complete, Mona and James were asked to leave the room.
"Vincent, I will be your teacher from now on. I know that you do not remember anything about your past, so James, Mona, and myself will help you get stronger."
She extended her open palm towards him. There were 4 different colored stones in her hands.
"These are stones corresponding to the elements you could have an affinity with. Pick one."
He picked the blue-colored stone first.
"Water element. Gives you an affinity with water and ice type spell. Inject some of your mana into it."
Vincent looked back at her. He didn't know how to use Mana.
"Concentrate on connecting yourself with the stone. Mana flows when you interact with your surroundings in harmony."
"Connecting with the stone?"
He closed his fist. Slowly, he began imagining that the stone was a part of him.
A few seconds passed, and he started to feel that something was flowing inside of his hand. It did not last long, so he thought that he had failed.
He opened his palm. Melida looked at the stone and frowned.
"Did I succeed?"
The stone was violet in color. She inspected the stone with her own mana and found out that his mana was extremely pure.
In terms of purity, Mana was something that was dependant on the user and his methods. The purer your mind, the purer your mana. Kids below the age of two were the only entities that existed in nature with this level of mana purity.
"Your affinity with water is good. Try this."
He tried the rest of the crystals, Namely Flame, Ground, and Unknown elements. The first two elements reacted similarly to his mana. His affinity with them was decent.
The Unknown element contained Light, Darkness, and Sound. You can only possess one of the three affinities, as all three of them contradict each other.
The Unknown element crystal was colorless. Vincent picked it up, and it exploded into tiny fragments.
"I am sorry!"
He bowed down towards Melida out of fear. He didn't mean to break it.
Melida used her mana and gathered all the fragments into her palm.
"Hmm. The darkness element."
The crystal fragments were pitch black in color.
Vincent was still bowing to her. She approached him and patted his head.
"Don't worry about it. It was just a stone."
He looked back at her and asked,
"What is a hero supposed to do?"
Melida chuckled softly. She was old, and she had only witnessed 5 heroes in her lifetime. You would think that 5 is a big number, but the problems of this world require the help of thousands of such heroes.
After thinking for some time, she said,
"A hero is supposed to protect people from harm, no matter what sacrifice he has to make in return."
"Protect people?"
She placed her hand at his shoulder and said,
"Yes. And for that, he needs to keep getting stronger so that the sacrifices don't hurt him too much."
She took out a spellbook from her shelf and passed it to him.
"This is what you will be learning for the next month."
