Capítulo 7: Guilt

Kisetsu 61, 3rdGenme - Araukaria, Kimaran Region

While Lup and Telly lie unconscious in a corner of Renāto's house, he stares at something large and bandaged above his fireplace, and then looks at his musketeer's hat, hanging next to it. Suddenly, Renāto starts having flashes of memories, seeing a dead musketeer in a red forest, Kosuta's face, frightened and surprised, after the accident that occurred. As these memories arise, his eyes start to turn a bluish color.

Then he hears the voice of one of the young musketeers, waking him up from his trance. His eyes return to their original color.

— ... Where am I? — says Lup, disoriented — Renāto?

— Oh, my head — Telly adds, also waking up - What happened?

Renāto turns his attention to the two of them.

— You can't look after yourselves, that's what's happened. The next time you see two yetis, the size of a young jequitibá, coming towards you, run. Your pride almost got you killed.

— We couldn't just leave you there, sir. We took an oath.

— You seemed to be in danger, master. And what would we gain by acting like cowards?

— You wouldn't be cowards if you ran away. You'd be sensible. It's one thing to run away from a fight, it's another to fight knowing that you have no chance of victory. The oath only applies if you're alive, and taking your own life goes against what it means to be a musketeer. You have to prioritize life over honor.

— Yes, sir. We understand...

— Indeed, master. But I still don't understand what your intention was in tying yourself up in a trap...

— I saved you, so it's up to me to ask the questions here — Renāto quips on the subject — So, are you going to tell me what you want?

The two young men sit down in their corners.

— We have a message for you from Gurenāru II.

— I hope it's important. Go ahead.

— Okay. Erh... Could you send the message, Telly? It still hurts when I try to think too much.

— Okay. "The Shirei-kan summons you to discuss the case of Gurētofue 36".

Renāto, after hearing that, looks out of the window, where there's a blizzard going on.

— Well. I think my icy vacation is over. The chimaras have attacked more musketeers, apparently, right?

— Yes. We're unable to go into the forest at Dō no Mori until further notice.

— The region has never been so divided, sir.

— I see. And it's up to me to somehow sort it out. It makes sense...

Renāto walks around the room, a jug of tea in hand, and after taking a sip, makes his decision.

— So let's go and see young Shirei Kan. But before we go, answer something for me: Why did you risk so much to bring a simple message here? Surely you knew the danger. You could simply have admitted that you weren't capable enough for such a journey.

The two of them then frown when they hear the kyapen's questioning.

— I didn't even think about the danger, gur... I mean, master. After all, how else would we see a legendary musketeer in person?

— And what's the point of always staying in our comfort zone? That way we'll never be musketeers like you. That's why we left Berugamotto.

Listening to the young men, Renāto let out a long sigh, aware that they were convinced of what they were saying.

— I wouldn't recommend that to you. With great powers come great consequences. I'll tell you why on the way to the capital. The talk is good, but it's time to go. Get dressed!

— Yes, sir! — they both say in unison.

Soon after, at the door of Renāto's house, the two musketeers are talking to each other, already better off.

— We're too weak, kid. We should ask him to train us. Imagine using a Dentō as strong as his!

— Well, we probably couldn't take the weight of that nejireta. It's no use having that power and not knowing how to control it.

— ... On second thought, we'll learn little by little anyway.

— What's more, Renāto already has his problems, Lup. And he still has to deal with problems involving the whole of Araukaria. But I believe we'll find our own Dentō, just as Renāto found his.

— Right!

And then, they see Renāto wearing his full Legendary Musketeers costume, the only costume still worn by a musketeer who battled in the Shirīzu Senkyo war. On it, an ancient symbol is worn by the first shirei-kan Gurenāru I: the Burauza. Behind him, hooked behind his back, is a large, bandaged instrument, looking more like a beam than a sword. And on his hat, there were three feathers: one white, one black, and one blue, representing the trinity of the Legendary Musketeers.

Lup and Telly look at Renāto with admiration, who is baffled by the attention of the two young men.

- What's wrong? Have you lost something here? Go ahead, you brats! I think I can catch up with you.

They wake up from their trance and continue their journey. As they set off on their journey, a thought comes to Renāto as he glances at the feathers of his hat.

- Bapinoza, Dereon... I'll do it for you!

The living legend Renāto!
