"Don't ever try something like that ever again! Do you know how worried I was?" his mother shouted in anger.
"I will try my best, but I can't promise anything else," Richard replied.
"God... why did I raise you to be this honest? Can't you just lie to make me feel better?" she said as she sat down on the couch.
"Though I can promise to always return home, no matter what," Richard replied.
He naturally couldn't guarantee that he would always be able to return home, but there was nothing stopping him from making Queen use a clone to replace him when he couldn't do so for an extended period of time.
Holding the woman, Richard tried to calm her down as much as possible, understanding the type of fear that could overwhelm you when you see a loved one in such a dangerous situation.

One Year Later
1st POV
A year later, I was in the Baxter Building, specifically the basement where the inter-dimensional portal was being made. We were done building it, but as we all know, in every Fantastic Four backstory, the government comes along and confiscates everything. So currently, the entire facility was under some sort of lockdown. One couldn't imagine how much this angered the entire team.
Mr. Storm was going everywhere and meeting everyone possible to intervene and give them back control of the project, but nothing was working. Reed wasn't even allowed into the facility for a certain period, but that had been remedied. The Storm siblings had no idea what they could even do, while I was just here to see how things played out in this twisted universe.
I had the money, but not the kind that could command the government, and I had no means to actually help them out of the situation, so in truth, I was just as stumped as the rest of the team. But unlike them, this didn't affect me in any way.
"This used to be a lunch area, but it's now some sort of communications base for the military," Reed said, showing the base to a man who was slightly shorter than he was.
"Is it that bad?" the man asked.
"Oh, it's way worse," Reed replied as he led the man deeper into the facility.
"Um, who's this?" I asked.
"Oh, Richard, I thought you stopped coming around."
"Well, we say a lot of things in anger, and I was busy then."
"Ben, this is Richard Griffon, and he is one of the reasons we finished this early. And Richard, meet Benjamin Grimm; he is a friend."
"Oh... that makes sense. Nice to meet you, though. And by the way, have you seen Mr. Complex?" I asked, feeling as though something terrible would happen today.
"I can't say that I have, but it's likely that you will find him in the main area. He likes admiring his work."
"Thanks," I said, then left for the main area.
As I was leaving, I heard Ben ask if I was talking about Doom as he and Reed laughed.
It is surprising to me that Ben knows him at this stage... oh, wait, sorry, there was some mention of all three of them going to the same college.
Choosing to ignore them, I continued walking towards the main area.

Third-Person POV
His phone rang out, and Richard immediately picked it up. As soon as the phone reached his ears, he could hear a loud noise from the building, as though a massive mansion was being booted up.
Checking the phone again, Richard found it was a conference call, and all the members who worked on the teleporter were on it, except for Doom.
"Richard! Reed! Come to the main room. Doom wants to use the machine!" Sue shouted.
"What?!"
Richard heard a loud sound coming from the room Reed had just entered, followed by a bunch of footsteps indicating running.
From the reaction of everyone in the lab and Reed's own, Richard could already guess what was about to happen.
Running into the main lab, Richard saw Doom wearing a suit that the team had modified to work in the other dimension they would visit.
Sue was on a platform below him, shouting and begging him to reconsider his actions. Looking a bit further, Richard saw the now-activated portal, which was unlike the normal blue portal he was familiar with; the portal was red.
"Doom, the portal wasn't built to handle such a level of dimensional travel!" Richard screamed at him.
Normally, he wouldn't care and would find a way to activate the portal, but at the moment, that was impossible.
A brief scan already showed that the destination's energy was now powering up the portal.
The portal's power source had long since given out, and the beings behind the portal had connected to it for their own purposes.
"Shut up, you insufferable child! My calculations are beyond what your simple mind can understand!" Doom replied for the first time so far, simply because he heard Richard's voice.
