Liza looked at me shaking her head. “He was not my lover Joseph. He was a friend and a brother.” I only nodded to what Liza said signifying my acceptance of my wrong assumption.

“I’m planning to take a look on Madam Jade’s girls inside the den perhaps you can give me some tips on how not to look like a novice.” It was my attempt to take an opportunity for whatever news about Madam Jade my hands could lay on.

“You’re still obsessing with Georgia, I guess. Well, about time before she turned into a hag. Last time I heard, the Amah was no longer the one handling the den.” Liza said.

“I heard that too. Do you think the new management would be running the brothel just like before? What happened to Madam Jade anyway?” I asked.

“They said she took a long vacation to China.”

“But she was not Chinese, she was local. Why would she go to a backward place when she was a creature of the modern?”

“We don’t know what was in her mind, Joseph.”
