It was unusually dark. With the absence of light that normally shone from the nearby street lamps, the area surrounding the small convenient store was left pitch black. Though the lights from the inside provided some minor coverage, there was naught but an endless abyss beyond, appearing to swallow everything up into its girthy maw.
While this didn't affect Reverb very much, the Patrolling Hero definitely had his own concerns about everything as he made his usual nighttime rounds. While the darkness wasnt too much of a hindrance as his quirk allowed him to control various forms of waves, harmless sound waves being one of them, he still felt uncomfortable wandering the area. It was just a small gut feeling, but due to his own job as a hero, he couldn't afford to skip any sections regardless of the circumstances.
Reverb hadn't been a hero for very long but he took his role as a scout very seriously, even if he was only a mere sidekick. His main task was to detect any ongoing criminal activity before sending out radio waves to warn any nearby heroes, both major and minor. He wasn't a combat oriented hero and was altogether useless when it came down to fights, instead merely relying on gadgets and trinkets if the need arose. Though possessing an activistic nature, he wasn't afraid to throw down in order to protect his own life. Generally, he preferred to stay out of range of the bigger and more areas as those offered as more dangerous are for the darker underbelly of villains.
There was something else besides the darkness that bothered him though, further contributing to his bad feeling.
As of late, the crime along Reverb's patrol route had been drastically reduced, with more and more small timey villains being found beaten and tied up in secluded alleyways. The victim would always mutter some gibberish about a devil fox followed by fearful shivering and sweat, clearly beyond frightened by what had transpired. When found, they didn't resist capture in the slightest nor did they answer any questions as to what had happened, keeping their mouths shut and their eyes lowered. Even heroes whose quirks specialized in interrogation had no luck prying any useful information that could lead them to the truth. They might as well have been statues for all the useful data the heroes collected.
The only thing that was certain was that it wasnt the work of a licensed hero.
No self respecting, registered hero would simply leave a criminal in a filthy alley and not take the credit for it. Not only was it incorrect to leave a villain unsupervised, even if said perpetrator was knocked out, but it was also idiotic as the hero wouldn't recieve any praise or recognition for their actions. In a heroic society where a plethora of heroes were made each and every day, one needed to constantly show off their ability while doing their jobs in order to survive in the profession. Without any recognition, the hero would eventually fade into obscurity and get lost within the next shuffle of newly bred heroes.
There did exist the possibility of another villain attacking the criminals, but that by itself seemed to be unlikely. Smaller criminals tended to either act alone or became lackeys to a much more powerful ally, a villain who could potentially lead them to places they couldn't hope to get to by themselves. While fight between the small time crooks did happen, they had never happened on this scale and certainly not for this long.
Eventually, the heroes narrowed it down to one possible explanation.
A vigilante.
Reverb had heard all of this through the upper grapevine and this was the theory he most agreed with.
A vigilante was, in summary, an unlicensed hero that worked in the shadows to bring justice to villains. While this sounded admirable on paper, it was essentially committing a crime in and of itself. Usage of quirks to harm other was prohibited without a hero license and actively seeking out villains to beat them to a pulp was a big no-no. So, while what the vigilante was doing could be misconstrued as praise worthy to common folk, to the authorities, he or she was just large stain they hadn't managed to get rid of.
Of course, the Patrolling Hero hadn't ran into any vigilante himself, but he HAD on occasion found a few bodies during his daily nightly checkups. It had left a bad taste in his mouth on every occasion and each time he prayed that he himself never ran into the perpetrator.
BANG!!
"ARRRGGGHHHH!!"
(("The heck was that??!!")) Reverb mentally exclaimed as he whirled around, head swiveling towards the direction the sound had come from. Though he couldn't see anything, sound waves allowed him to get a semi accurate picture of what was happening as he began using echolocation to map out the area. (("Gotta find out what's happening."))
After receiving the waves and processing them to get a read on the surroundings, Reverb ran forward, heading towards an alley situated as the back of the nearest convenience store. He had half a mind to immediately radio in some help using his ability to control the wavelengths, but he had to actually make sure there was trouble. It wouldn't look good for him if some guy, possibly an employee of the store, had merely tripped over something and screamed out. Calling out prematurely would hurt his reputation and lower his trust, which would be crucial in future situations.
Reaching the alley entrance, Reverb whipped out a flashlight, something he didn't normally use due to own reliance on his quirk. However, he was beginning to panic slightly and no longer felt comfortable with a simple sound drawn depiction of the situation as he shone the bright beam of light down the narrow alley. Brown eyes honed in on two figures positioned near the back, one held up against the wall by the throat and the other tightly gripping his prey, two large bushy tails emerging from where the tailbone was located.
(("Crap, gotta radio in someone. This is trouble.")) Reverb immediately began sending radio signals, broadcasting his thoughts to any hero that happened to be within a mile radius.
Meanwhile, the person that the Patrolling Hero had identified as the vigilante, took notice of the new arrival and proceeded to let go of his victim, throwing him aside like a ragdoll. Reverb couldn't make out the full details of the figure as a good deal of him was blocked out by trash that had been piled into the back, but he did notice the eyes. Cold, intense, analytical red hues that seemed to stare into the very depths of his soul. An uncontrollable shiver ran down his spine as an irrational fear gripped him, making his teeth chatter.
It was like looking at a demon.
Reverb wanted to run, to flee the scene entirely, which he was free to do now that he had broadcasted his location to whatever ally was nearby. However, his body was rendered motionless, unable to look away from the stranger as sized him up carefully.
"You're a hero right?" Reverb heard the demon say, a surprisingly young voice questioning him. "You dont smell like one. You reek of fear."
Without uttering another word more, the figure vanished before reappearing before him, wind blowing in his face from the pure speed upon which he had travelled. This time, when he deigned to look closer, he noticed that the vigilante had seven tails, five more then what he had seen previously.
"I'm already bored anyways," the vigilante muttered as he walked away. "You're free to take him. Feel free to take the credit fam."
Reverb didnt even have the chance to say anything as, when he turned around, the figure had already disappeared.
---------------------
"You're far too slow," Kurahira muttered as he easily leaned away the kick that had been aimed at his temple. "I thought you wanted to be a hero. Hit faster! Harder! More precise!"
Three tails swished along as Kura moved his body back, niftly dodging each and every strike with ease, red, slitted eyes calmly assessing each movement. Each shift, every breath, every movement of wind caused by the strikes was taken into account as he weaved in and out of the string of attacks. Even when the tempo and timing of the incoming blows switched up, he calmly avoided them or blocked it with the back of his hand.
"Very good fam. You've improved quite a bit." Kurahira Amaya praised as he stopped one of the attackers kicks. "Almost enough to be a threat to the lower ranked heroes with useless quirks. You definitely have come far....Izuku."
Taking a deep breath, a young man with messy green hair and bright green eyes relaxed from his stance, sweat coating his face, chest, and back. "Thank you. It's all thanks to you, Kura-chan.
Kura merely shrugged as he grabbed a nearby water bottle and tossed it towards the young man, giving it some extra oomph, which Izuku caught easily.
"I'm simply Interested in how things will play out for you is all," Kurahira answered honestly as he took a sip from his own clear, white water bottle. "As of next month, you'll have trained with me for five years. Your strength is pretty damn good without a quirk, but I'm afraid you wont be able to get very far without one."
"Even so, I cant thank you enough," Izuku continued as he took a swig of water. "It was you who helped me get closer to my dream."
"Yeah, yeah," Kurahira muttered, unmoved by the sappy talk, his eyes rolling in their sockets. "I'm more interested in how your sword training is coming along. Did you get any better? Maybe you could challenge me with six of my tails out?"

Kurahira Amaya
Age: 14

Quirk: Fox Spirit
Using the power of the mythological Nine Tailed Fox, Kura is blessed with a multitude of abilities with certain restrictions. "I'm not sure if I could go that far, but I've been working diligently," Izuku muttered as he set the water bottle down onto the ground. "I'm pretty sure I could fight you with at least 3 tails out."

(("That confident huh?")) Kurahira said internally as he tilted his head, foxlike eyes staring at the youth in front of him. (("Maybe we'll have to put that to the test."))
As someone who only saw this whole situation as one amusing game, Kura was very much interested in seeing just how far his toy was coming along. Izuku Midoriya, the boy who wanted to become a hero, had been under his tutelage for quite a while and in that time, Kura had molded the youth into a proper challenge. What had once been a scrawny crybaby with shaky courage had transformed into a fit teen who possessed far more confidence and strength then had been present. While Kura himself had come a long way into developing his own quirk, Izuku had made staggering progress in the realm of the quirkless up until where he could pretty much defeat a multitude of small tier quirk holders should he be given the proper weapon.
In the end though, it was all just one big experiment conducted by Kura in order to alleviate his own boredom. Whether or not it succeeded didnt truly matter to him as he was just in it for the kicks.
"Anyways, come on," Kurahira said as his two other tails merged until only one large, fluffy orange fox tail remained. "Its time to head to class. We'll be late."
