“You know Den san.” Chika started as I drive down this narrow road. “When I was younger thought that everyone realized how important the environment is. I thought that everyone knew it needed to be guarded and protected.
“What happened to that idea?” I asked.
“I grew up. I saw that most people could give a rat’s ass about the environment. Most people just see it as this thing that is there. As if it is going to sustain itself. Most people are not thinking about the carbon footprint that they are leaving behind. Most people are not thinking about how they can make an impact.”
“Most people are thinking about how that picture with the waterfall will look good on Instagram.”
“Yeah, exactly. It’s like they can recognize the natural beauty when they decide to go out to a national park or something. But they are looking at it like they are in Disneyland or something. They are not seeing it as something that is truly special. They their thumbs are not turning green.”
