Capítulo 116: Future talk

Today, I have an appointment with Samuel G. Quahog, the current president of MACUSA. Nothing had changed since my visit a few years ago. Still the same deafening noise in the entrance hall, the same elevator filled with people, and the same hallway on the top floor screaming wealth and power. My father absolutely wanted to accompany me, he does not trust the president of MACUSA, and neither do I. I did not pass the door of his office that my instinct is buzzing, warning me of danger, but oddly it's not as strong as the last time. I guess it's because I got a lot stronger, or Quahog is starting to get old.
My father knocks on the large office door and the president responds immediately.
"Come in! Ah, there you are, perfect! I was just waiting for you." He is comfortably seated on the sofa in front of the fireplace, a cigar, and a glass of whiskey in his hands. "Can I get you a whiskey?"
"No, thank you. We're here to discuss the terms of our arrival as we agreed."
"Sure, sit down. I took the liberty of changing the terms of what we discussed last time a bit. You don't need the money, so instead, I got you some land to set up your factories and you will have some more land for your mansion. I also added a clause in the contract that no member of MACUSA has the right to place spells or surveillance equipment on any land or building that belongs to you with the exception of the building that will be reserved for the ARGUS project. "
"The ARGUS projects?" I thought that giving names of mythological creatures to projects was out of fashion.
"This is the name my intelligence services gave to the magiphone spy project, we would like you to work on it as quickly as possible."
"It's a complex project that will take some time for sure, but I could already start thinking about it during the holidays."
"Wonderful." He finishes his glass of whiskey which he puts on the table. He looks particularly happy. "Well now that we are talking about your studies, everything is in order for your transfer to Ilvermorny. I have taken the liberty of adding to your curriculum the class of laws and customs of the wizarding world. But as your schedule is already full, you can just take the exam, or go to that class and just take the exam of another. "
The advantage of Ilvermorny is also the flexibility of its curriculum. There are a total of twenty subjects among which a student must compose his classes from the fourth year. The only restriction is that there must be at least one class per day and that the charms class is compulsory for everyone no matter what year they are in. So, it is possible that a lazy student only passes five OWL in total. But it is quite rare that people spend so few classes, firstly because their parents will force them to take more, and secondly, because the OWL obtained will strongly impact the job that we are going to get later.
I chose eleven subjects in all. Well, twelve if you count the new subject that has just been imposed on me. Metamorphosis and arithmancy on Monday, potion, and defense against the dark arts on Tuesday. Wednesday is flight, charms, and astronomy class in the evening. On Thursdays, I have herbology and alchemy classes, and on Fridays, it's the care of magical creatures and the study of runes. I have also signed up for the Duel Club and plan to pass the Quidditch team selections. I can't wait to steal the snitch under Samael's nose.
"Why not, I have nothing against additional material."
"Well, I think we've covered what we need to discuss." He pulls a file out of a drawer on a small table right next to the sofa. "Here, the contract, you can read it and sign it when you're ready."
My dad and I go through the contract, there is nothing really special inside of it until I come across an interesting point.
"I'm going to have Level 4 agent status. What does that mean?"
"Oh, you don't need to worry about that now. There are five levels of accreditation within MACUSA. First of all, there are level 1 agents, they represent the bulk of our troops. They take care of the paperwork, the small surveillance missions, the menial tasks in a way. Then there is the level 2 agents, who already have more experience on the field and can take more serious missions, they are often accompanied by level 3 agents who are team leaders. Level 3 agents can give orders to other agents but only those under their command. Then there are level 4 agents, they are people with strategic values like you or the very high levels agents. They can command any MACUSA agent unless the orders they give are directly opposed to mine since I'm the only level 5 agent. "He takes a glass of whiskey and places another one in front of my father. "I added this status because it makes you eligible for remote protection from our services if you request it. I already have an agent stationed in Mystic Falls to let us know if a certain dark mage comes to visit you. "
I finish inspecting the document, but I do not see anything that could hide traps at first sight. I add my signature and my father does the same.
"Perfect, that's something out of the way. Young Sean can now choose a property that interests him, and the renovation can begin as soon as the architect's plans are ready." My father seems taken aback by what the president has just announced.
"Well, I thought that was something we would discuss as a family before we gave you our answer." Quahog just puts on a polite smile when he hears my father's response.
"Well, technically I'm employing Sean not you. Of course, you are free to live with him in this new house until he comes of age as a parent. But in the end, this house is meant for Sean. It is up to him to make it a family manor or not. " Well, I already know the land I want to build on.
"I want a wooded land near the town where we currently live, the old abandoned Salvatore family property, and possibly the adjacent land to complete our contract. And I do not intend to throw my family out, but I will make it the new Bones mansion in America." My father looks relieved to hear my decision and puts a loving hand on my shoulder.
"Well, it's decided then, I'm going to send my notaries to reclaim the land. I suppose I could use the excuse of abandoning residential land to reclaim it. Besides, while I think about it. You no longer have a job, Arthur. What were you doing in the ministry again? "
"I was an Auror."
"Ah yes, well if you want, a team leader position has just become available because of some bad vampire cases. I don't know why but they are getting more and more out of control. Anyway, the position is yours if you want it."
"That's kind of you, but I need to discuss this with my wife first. We just moved in and it's been a long time since I took a vacation."
"Of course, my proposal is still valid until the end of the week, after that, I will have to appoint a new team leader."
"You will have your answer by then." My dad pauses and looks at me with a smirk. "Well since I think about it, we would be very happy if you could attend my mother-in-law's wedding to Mr. Marrow, you could come with your wife and daughter." The president's face darkened a bit.
"I would love to come with Lana, I have already received an invitation from Ephthalius. However, I am sorry to tell you that it will only be the two of us. My wife died several years ago already. "
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean ..."
"Don't apologize, you don't have to. It's been a long time since I mourned Savina." He sighs deeply. "I'm sorry but I think it's time to finish this meeting. I still have a lot of work ahead of me."
Samuel can't hide it from me, I can feel his pain, his grief, and his anger. He has not yet mourned his wife.
