Diluc's body was thrown off into the air because of the Earthquake that The Nameless King had caused.
Without hesitation nor delay, the Spearsword pierced Diluc's chest, entering from the front and exiting out the back. Blood decorated the cloudy arena.
Without flinching, Diluc retaliated by striking down with the Dragonslayer Greataxe. While mid-air, he had equipped his heaviest and hardest-hitting weapon. Using both his overwhelming strength as well as gravity, the Axe descended onto the Nameless King's skull. On the way down, the Greataxe gathered electricity from a lightning strike that the King had sent down which had further strengthened his attack.
The attack instantly took off a quarter of the Nameless King's health. In real life, a strike to the head was fatal, the same was true in a real-life version of Dark Souls. The trade-off being the difficulty in trying to attack the head. This resulted in even the Nameless King himself losing a quarter of his total health.
Diluc immediately drunk an estus with the time he had gained after his attack. The fight continued.
As a result of his of lightning being used against him, the frequency of lightning strikes from the sky had decreased. Diluc had more breathing room as a result of his suicidal attack.
However, just because the lightning had lessened in frequency, it doesn't mean that the King had gotten any weaker. In fact, because he wasn't paying attention to summoning lightning anymore, his combos became more and more sophisticated when in close combat.
Every time Diluc had gotten in range to use his Ultra Great Swords, the Nameless King was ready to trade in order to take his life once again.
Every attack from the Nameless King threatened Diluc's life. However, even under this insane pressure, he was able to continue fighting in close quarters combat. He dodged every attack with grace and precision. Of course, precision being, if he didn't achieve perfection in his dodges, he'd die a most gruesome death.
He had noticed that the more he shaved at the King's health, the more the smile on his face grew. You may ask; who's face? The answer; both of them. Both of them were enjoying putting their lives on the line to defeat the other. Even the hardest vanilla boss was in glee while fighting, even if just beforehand, his companion had been killed by the ashen one in front of him.
Their weapons clashed numerous times, the Nameless King began using more and more reckless moves in his excitement while Diluc kept improving on the fly. It was a battle of evolution; the King was a prodigy at fighting. He may not remember between different attempts, but every attempt, he'd evolve while fighting. And Diluc was the complete opposite, it was the King's monstruous short-term evolutions vs Diluc's vast experience fighting the exact same person over and over.
Diluc may know the King's flaws in fighting better than the king himself.
Their slashes caused the wind to dance and scream. Their smiles resembled that of Asura or the Devil. And their spells caused a beautiful light show like no other.
As a result of their non-stop battling, the clouds that acted as a backdrop and a floor rose up and started to cloud their vision while battling.
This didn't stop them from furiously aiming at each other's throats.
By the time the clouds had settled, the battle was won.
One of the two warriors was spitting out his own blood while holding the large wound on his abdomen.
The victor was Diluc.
The Nameless King was not used to fighting within a smoke screen, even a prodigy like him wasn't able to adjust within minutes.
Diluc however, relied on tricky tactics to win his fights.
The Nameless King, although he had been defeated, the smile of his face never faded. He rose his arm up for the last time.
He gave his weapon to Diluc as a gift from one warrior to another. As a thank you for the greatest battle of his life.
Diluc took the Swordspear from the dying boss. The smile faded from his face. He didn't feel bad for killing the Nameless King but he definitely wanted the blood-pumping fight to last longer.
It's ironic that one of the only fights he's ever enjoyed ended before it could reach a climax.
The Nameless King disintegrated into a white mist, joining his dragon in the clouds. He didn't drop a soul for Diluc to trade in for anything as he already gave him the weapon. Could this mean that the Nameless King's soul was in the Dragonslayer Swordspear? Maybe, can't be certain.
Regardless, the fight had ended. It was time for the Ringed City DLC. He decided that he'd wait to defeat the Soul of Cinder, he didn't know what the consequences would be if he finished the game without finishing the DLC. Best case scenario, he'd be able to go back and continue with it. Worst-case, he dies from the flames because he isn't strong enough, even after finishing the rituals, possibly not allowing him to respawn.
The first boss of the Ringed City DLC were the Twin Demon Princes. They were a duo of fire demons that would alternate between ranged and melee modes of attack. And depending on which one is killed first, the final phase of the boss fight would be different.
Unfortunately, after the boss fight he just experienced, he only died twice before getting rid of them.
(A.N. I always found the twin princes to be on the same difficulty of the Nameless King but that is hardly thematic. I want the strongest bosses in Dark Souls to be 'humans' not beasts or demons.)
This resulted in the stalemate from the Nameless King fight to not only be resolved on this day, but he also progressed another boss before he was transported back to the real world.
The next two boss fights rivalled the Nameless King in difficulty. Midir and Gael.
But that also was the problem. They only rivalled the Nameless King.
It still took him a week to defeat them each because they were quite different in their fighting styles and they definitely made his blood boil when he fought them, but they weren't able to grow like the Nameless King could.
Every fight with them felt the same, Gael more so because he had completely lost his mind and used muscle memory to fight more than intellect.
The fights with Darkeater Midir were enjoyable because it reminded him of Monster Hunter and the like, a small human felling a large dragon that is capable of destroying cities. It was empowering to fight Midir as an equal. However, there were only so many attacks that a big dragon could throw.
Dragons can't learn techniques; all of their attack are the same. The fight lost its charm after he knew every attack Midir would throw. Diluc still lost for a day or so, but the fight was boring.
Gael suffered from a different type of boredom. All of his attacks were vastly different, they were horribly unpredictable and there was absolutely no pattern to his madness. Unfortunately, he didn't have the damage to back it up. None of his attacks were one-shot, this allowed Diluc to simply trade multiple times when he was certain to be hit and continue fighting without much issue.
From Gael's soul, Diluc obtained the, 'Gael's Greatsword' which allowed the wielder to jump all over the place and attack along the way.
He had also obtained the Frayed Blade from Midir's soul. It was a difficult decision between the Old Moonlight spell and a badass katana, but even if the spell would be more useful, the Frayed Blade was infinitely cooler.
Of course, he farmed a ringed knight in order to obtain the Paired Ringed City Greatswords. His collection of badass weapons went from two to six in what felt like an instant.
Finally, it was time for the fight with the big bad of the Dark Souls world. The Soul of Cinder.
Fabled to be the combination of all Lords of Cinder throughout history, using all of their skills in tandem.
None had been his challenger in many years, and even within that pool of challengers, none had been victorious.
Well, that was until Diluc slapped the Soul of Cinder to death.
Even the Gwyn form wasn't enough to stop him, he had finished all of the side missions after all.
The best part about the fight was that Diluc was able to hear a 'plin plin plon' in the distance, as if the fire itself was spectating the fight.
Which resulted in Diluc timing his attacks with the 'plin plin plon'.
It was not a good day for the Soul of Cinder.
