"She's sleeping, be quiet," Ethan said as he and David returned to Ruth's treatment area. "Just put the cloth on her arm, I need to make some more stuff for your eye". Ethan carefully wrapped and tied the cloth on Ruth's arm as to not wake her up.
"What do you need to make for me? I already have an eyepatch that will prevent infection, I don't see the need in anything else." "I can make some healing cloth like I did with Mom." David stated. "And what? My dangerous wound will just disappear? Do you think people will just let it g-" Ethan stopped mid-sentence. "Shit, this is going to be annoying", He finally said.
"What do you mean?" David asked. "Well, I just realized something. We need a cover-up story for all the things you'll make, else your cover will be blown. Think about it, Ruth's arm will go through a miraculous amputation where there's no further damage, I won't get infected wounds, and all the enchanted artifacts you'll make for the settlement will need an explanation." Ethan explained.
"We need someone to cover up for us since I and your mother are more of a defensive force, so we don't really do politics." Ethan continued. "How about Alex?" David asked, "He's the one currently in charge of the supplies, and I'm sure he'll want to help if his status will rise up with all the advantages my enchantments will bring."
"How do you know about his ambitions? I don't recall him ever saying anything when you were present." "Sarah likes to complain about it. Apparently, he really got into it lately. He keeps planning ways to climb up the ladder, and both she and her mother find it ridiculous"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Alex? You in there?" Ethan asked in a loud voice. "I'm here, what do you need?" The man in question came out. "David and I wanted to talk to you about something, are you free right now?"
"You caught me in a bad time, I'm currently working out a solution to the damage we took in yesterday's attack," Alex yelled from within. "We actually came to discuss that, we have a solution for you, though it will be a bit... Special"
"Um, what do you mean by 'special'? Is it one of those times where I have to trust you on this?" Alex asked. "Will you feel better if I say that with this you'll basically guarantee and solidify your position as the chief of supplies, and moreover, your status within the council will rise exponentially" Ethan offered.
"... Let's talk elsewhere," Alex said and the trio walked a few hundred meters into the desert.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Right, I think we're far enough, what is your special thing?" Alex asked as they found a small cave to sit in. "Before I tell you, this is a very VERY important matter. I trust you, but I still need you to vow that you'll keep whatever is said here a secret" Ethan said.
Alex was taken aback by Ethan's seriousness. Normally, Ethan was somewhat of a joker, so him being dead serious was a little frightening. "S-sure, I vow that whatever is said here would stay here."
"Good. So about the special thing I was talking about, David somehow awakened a quirk." Ethan got straight to the point. "....WHAT?!" Alex exclaimed in a loud voice. "Yea... My quirk will allow us to solve most of the problems we're facing by enchanting objects, but I want my quirk to be a secret since I don't really want to die just yet. So I need you to spout some bullshit about their origins when I give them to you."
"So you're telling me that by some miracle you awakened a quirk that can practically solve all our problems, but I have to lie about the objects, thus ruining my credibility and career if this got out? I know that the people here despise quirks, but you can't hide it forever, especially if you want to use it so blatantly in front of the public eye. Wouldn't it be better to just rip off that bandaid now? The damage will continue to rise the more time you hide it." Alex asked.
"Alex, you know that if David's quirk gets discovered they will probably attempt to kill him no matter how good he does. And if they can't get him, they will most likely go after your family and us since we're close. We can't let this information leak. Not until we have a solid contingency plan for these scenarios." Ethan reasoned.
"You do have a point, but it won't change the fact that we won't be able to hide this forever. If David manages to upgrade the settlement significantly enough, other factions will send troops to find out what happened whether the residents know or not." Alex worried.
"We will get there later. Are you with us?" Ethan asked. "Yeah, but you better bring some awesome things! I want to at least move up the supply department a few notches up the ladder before this place goes to shit." Alex joked.
"Don't worry, I'll create whatever you need me to. But first I think I should create a lot of medical supplies right? Also, it really doesn't take long for me to enchant the simple stuff, so you should come up with lies ASAP. Although, I can just enchant the normal supplies for a little, hidden, healing bonus and that should buy you some time." David suggested.
"Good idea, in the meantime I'll also create a list for all the stuff I need you to enchant." Alex agreed.
