Capítulo 68: First siege (3)

My two daggers shoot out like snakes and dig into the necks of two swordsmen. I jump past them and pull my daggers back out. The moment I land on the ground I turn and want to go for the third swordsman.

However, cutting the other two had cost me too much time and the third swordsman is already slashing at me. I cross my daggers to block and push the sword to the side. The swordsman steps back and thrusts at me. I sidestep and slash at him but my reach is too short.

We engage in a few more exchanges but neither manages to hit the other. A human scream draws the attention of both of us. The shield-bearer I bypassed is on the ground with a couple of goblins on top of him. Around him, I spot at least three dead goblins.

The goblins have overwhelmed the shield-bearer and are now coming to help me deal with the swordsman.

Working together we leave the swordsman no chance to fight back and he is quickly dispatched. After securing this area I scramble back up the dirt hill using the opening the attackers made and look around the camp.

Things aren't looking good for us. The walls have been breached at multiple spots and the melee fighting has begun. Unfortunately for us, we do not have enough goblins to overwhelm all the adventurers. Mostly they fight in small groups and take out a few goblins before moving on. We are losing!

The ones I worry about the most are the people of the alpha plane. However, when I look over to where they ought to have entered the situation is well contained.

The goblin leader is wildly swinging his halberd dealing with both shield-bearers of that team on his own. And he isn't losing. Each of his swings forces a shield-bearer to take a step back and dissipate the power of the impact.

The four goblin swordsmen are dealing with the rest of the team of the alpha plane and any other adventurers nearby. Their teamwork is only passable but they have learned to synchronize their slash skill. The skill must have reached level 4 or 5 and every time they use it simultaneously another adventurer dies while more get wounded.

They are in perfect control of that front so I hurry to the other side of the camp. There, the hobgoblins are desperately trying to stave off a host of adventurers. One of them is already on his last leg, literally, the other one got cut off. While the other one is bleeding profusely. But both of them are holding their positions while swinging savagely with their wooden mallets.

I hurry over with my group of goblins and engage but I am just one slightly stronger goblin instructor. At the edge of my vision, I see one of the hobgoblins gets run through by a lance. Then the other has his head cut off by the swing of a sword.

I lunge forward and slash at the lancer who killed the hobgoblins. The lancer is dealt some nasty cuts but he manages to pull back and I'm forced to dodge a sword slash coming my way.

This whole fight is getting nowhere right now but that is good. If I can minimize our losses until the goblin leader and the swordsmen finish up their side and come over then we win.

With a fiery explosion, my hopes of keeping casualties low are ended. I had forgotten about those god damned mages. The goblins are closely bunched up so despite the fireballs being lobbed over the walls they still hit. Even I get a few burns from a blast that hits close to me. Good thing is, so do the adventurers that are close to us.

Both the goblins as well as the invaders are burned and thrown into disarray. I take advantage of the chaos and trade another burn for the chance to kill two enemies.

The humans quickly regain their bearings and things turn bad. I yell out instructions to the goblins but the turmoil is too much at this point they have descended into a crazed state of killing and being killed. What is wrong with them?

<Some of them are evolving while others go into a frenzy to protect them. As I told you, your peaceful evolution is a rare sight. They are going berserk as a safety measure. It's to keep them from being killed easily during evolution.>

So they are getting stronger?

<Yes, they are. All the killing has given a lot of them enough EXP to hit their level cap and evolve. Sadly most of them won't live long enough to experience the full benefits of their evolution.>

For flip's sake! Can't things just go right for once?

As if to answer my mental question the goblin leader jumps over my head and kills another invader with an overhead sweep. We can do this!

With the four goblin swordsmen and the goblin leader to bolster our strength, we hold the advantage. Right on cue, the fireballs stop coming and we push.

There are only about 60 goblins left but the humans have been reduced to only 30 plus the mages that are doing god knows what out there.

I focus on the lancer. He's going to pay for killing one of my hobgoblins! With the goblin leader here I am not irreplaceable anymore. I can afford to die.

I jump forward while totally ignoring a sword that comes slashing at me. The sword is buried deep inside me but so are my daggers in the lancer's chest. The swordman smiles at the prospect of having killed the strongest goblin in the camp only to get a halberd lodged into his head.

The goblin leader is furious that I'm about to die but it isn't so bad. I'll simply respawn.

Shit, they don't know about respawning and all that, do they? I wouldn't want to be in the shoes of those invaders when all goblins go completely nuts.
