"Nothing like carrying one hundred pounds after shopping all day to work up a sweat," I said dropped the twenty bags at my feet. Evos did the same though he carefully handled the glass jar filled with his fish.
"I'm going put these guys in a tank, and can you tell people that they can't eat these." I wanted to scold him for trying to give me orders, but I realized that someone might try to eat them.
"Good point, just put down a sign that says don't touch, and that should do it." Leaving for the lab, I opened the door and almost stepped on a nearly invisible snake. 'Master is back!'
She sounded happy to see me, and I suddenly felt very guilty about leaving her in there all by herself. "How long have you been awake?" I asked as I picked up the reptile and walked over to the lab bench.
'Not long, I was sleeping when I felt Master coming to check in on me.' I nodded like that was my plan all along, but I had forgotten about the albino snake. "And now that I'm here, I want to ask you a few questions. Can you do that for me?"
'I will do anything for Master, even if I cost me my life.' Trying not to think about the brainwashed reptile, I moved on, "Do you have any memories before you met me? No matter how small they might be, I need to know."
The snake coiled into a mound before raising to meet my eye level, 'I don't recall much, but I do remember feeling cold. So cold I thought I would shatter into a thousand pieces. Then a warm fuzzy feeling enveloped my entire body, and as it did, I felt my connection to you. You wanted me to survive and evolve, so I did. I changed to fit your image of perfection, Master!'
While some people would love to have a talking reptile praise them, my life was already strange enough for me. The last thing I needed was an overzealous snake. 'It seems as if both the needs and the wants of the subject are taken into account during the evolution process. I can try this experiment again and hold a mental image to prove my theory.'
It was one route I could go down, though I wanted to do a little more digging with the subject I had in front of me. "Do you have a name? I can't keep writing down the snake and reptile in my notes."
'Whatever master wants calls me will be more than enough.'
"Fine, your name is Hebi. It means snake in my native tongue." Hebi hissed in apparent pleasure, 'So I am a Hebi, such a great name. Thank you for naming me, master.' Her positivity still put me off the edge, but I didn't have the heart to tell her off.
Hebi was like a child, and I found that even more disturbing. I had created her from my flesh and blood and experimented on her. "Hebi, what would you say if I asked you to undergo the same treatment?"
'I would do anything if master wished of it.' That was all the confirmation I needed. Taking a Darwin Serum dose, I gently lifted one of Hebi's scales and injected her. Taking a step back, I broadcast my thoughts on how I wanted her to change, holding a mental image.
But instead of growing and changing, Hebi started to writhe in pain, it only took me a second to understand what was happening, and I jumped into action.
Lifting my hand, a curved bone ejected from my wrist. Finding the injection site, I pushed in the bone syringe and started pumping nutrients into the snake. Hebi relaxed, and the transformation began in full.
She started to grow, swelling like a balloon, but she began to take up the entire countertop. Cursing, I grabbed the now python-sized snake and hauled it out of the room up to the deck. There was no one training right now, so I didn't have to explain the expanding snake.
Hebi stopped growing around the twenty-foot mark, but the transformation was long from finished. Her scales started to elongate and flatten across the middle of Hebi, becoming fins that looked razor-sharp.
Then the skin a foot behind her head split open, and two wings unfurled. Like the rest of her body, they were pure white with iridescent colors. 'A winged python, I guess it did work, but how about the rest of the changes.'
Like before, Hebi was in a deep sleep, so I had time to check her over. Opening her mouth, I looked inside, everything seemed to be in order, but then I spotted a line of white flesh going down her throat.
As I opened her mouth wider, the light hit the line, and it started to glow and heat up. Closing her mouth, I smiled. Hebi had evolved an advanced form of bioluminescence. Though instead of giving off the light, she seemed to absorb it.
The experiment was also a success. The image I had in my mind was an angle snake. I didn't believe it would work, but Hebi had grown a pair of wings and could weaponize light.
To wake her up faster, I reinserted my bone needle and fed Hebi through the improvised IV. After a few minutes, she started to wake up, 'Master, did it work? I feel stronger.' Hebi looked at her new body, 'I hope master is pleased by my new form. I tried to match the image you gave me.'
"I am more than please, and you don't have to call me master. Captain is fine, and yes, I'm very pleased." Hebi's wings flapped, and she lifted half her body off the ground, 'Hebi is happy that captain is happy.'
Then she opened her mouth, and a beam of light erupted from her mouth. After a minute the beam stopped and Hebi closed her mouth and I don't know how but I swear she blushed.
