Chapter 70 (Kellars Pov)
Shielding his eyes he wondered what on Laurentia the little idiot was doing, What kind of imbecile would purposefully overload a rune? Kellar watched intently paying close attention as the green runes began to slowly form, he recognized the basic fourth layer rune he had taught the young man. Kellars sensed something disturbing, the sheer amount of power the young man was forced into the three power runes was beyond stupid, just the backlash of doing something like that could kill him.
Kellar watched the grouped 5 enemy mages and swore to himself those bastards were no end of trouble, panting heavily he powered a large-scale 6 layered attack on the opposite side of the battlefield as far away from the young man's dangerous runes as he could manage. His attempts were thwarted in moments but he focused again and he shouted," help me distract them Verde!."
Next to him the commander of the Garrison also focused his efforts, the two channelled creating a buzzing in the air that even normal humans could feel. The sheer amount of mana Kellar drew in made his veins burn with the rush. out of the corner of his eye, Kellar watched the young man's work, the runes fully powered and he felt his heart skip a beat when the control rune shattered.
Kellar shouted "that suicidal idiot!" shielding his eyes Kellar created a barrier around himself and the others grouped close to the two mages. he wasn't entirely sure of what the young man was doing but the amount of power that young apprentice pushed into the runes was sheer stupidity. He felt the heat on his skin and the ground trembled as the enemy turned to ash, the darkness was pushed away as flames cover the entire battlefield in a flickering green lite.
The flame rushed in every direction expanding and turning the tightly packed Darva into living torches. Kellar gulped, he knew too well the damage of the green fire, he watched with cold detachment as the Darva spread the flames spreading the fire to double the original victims. The flame seemed to catch fire to any and everything even the rock burned.
Kellar knew he might never rid the image from his mind but he couldn't make himself look away. The panicked Darva screamed and howled in pain, after several long minutes in which the humans hid behind their shields watching the Darva frantically try to contain and put out the inferno. Luckily for the humans, they had been separated from the Darva when the runes went wild. Kellar and The commander didn't stand around and watch the much larger force get back under control.
Channelling his power Kellar worked tirelessly to send as many of the Darva to a flaming death as he could. The devastation he wrought would make any who see it have nightmares for the rest of their lives, as the panicking Darva tried to rally he used his remaining power to create one final rune. The Darvan mages were occupied with keeping the green flames from spreading amongst their ranks and soo couldn't do anything when Kellar channelled his mana over a large portion of the undamaged Darva.
Kellar said," I'm ready, Commander distract them, if this doesn't make them retreat then we are doomed!" The commander panted heavily beside him, Kellar's respect for the commander had risen significantly in this battle, the man did as he asked and created a distraction. by that the commander created a complex series of runes over the group of frantic enemy mages, as he did this Kellar's focused intently until the final layer formed creating his 10th layered masterpiece.
He felt his limbs tremble and his body shook with exertion, the spell activated and the fun began. An attendant caught him as he slumped allowing him to watch the shimmering runes begin the first stage. Many thought fires spells only burned people but that was only weak mages, any master mage worth their salt could create a true work of art.
Beside him, the commanders' voice quivered he said," what in the 9 hells does that do?" Kellar said," just watch maybe you can learn a thing or two from it." A blinding ray of heat shot from the center killing only 2 of the darva in the middle, the commander scoffed, He said," only two, all that effort for only two?" Kellar squinted at the floating runes and chuckled to himself.
The rune second faze activated and all the darva in a 100step radius collapsed falling to the ground. The air shimmered but no flame showed itself, the runes disappeared and the unmoving warriors just lay there as though asleep. He watched the commander as the man swallowed nervously glancing from Kellar to a large circle of motionless darva.
The commander said," rather impressive, putting them to sleep is useful but we still need to get to them and put them out of their misery." Kellar croaked," they aren't sleeping they are dead" The commander choked, and the man began to sweat even more than before. The commander said," that must be 50 of them, and you didn't use any fire."
Kellar chuckled he said," there is more to using fire than burning everything to an inferno as my apprentice did." The commander scowled at him, smiling Kellar said," I just burned the air removing the oxygen from their lungs, it's much harder to do but also much easier to clean up than putting out a forest fire, by the way, that wasn't the end of the attack." Kellar grinned at the commander, The third stage, formed, all 10 runes flashed and a dome of swirling red mana covered the motionless Darva, after three long seconds the dome vanished leaving nothing but ash.
Kellar was satisfied, the commander's pale face told him everything. The momentary quite was broken by the Darvan horde retreating back to the forest, Kellar said, "Besides I think that little idiot apprentice damaged more of the enemy than I did" Kellar glanced to the circle of burning green fire, the large circle of death lit the night and causing a haunting image of burning bodies. Kellar doubted he would be able to sleep properly again as he was sure to have nightmares.
Slumping to the ground Kellar sat there finding a soft rock, the sky began to lighten, exhausted he pulled up a water skin and drank some water. Reaching into his bag he pulled out a strip of dried meat, He smelled the hard dry meat and felt bile rising in his throat, the stench of burning flesh made his dinner rise in his throat. Kellar tossed the meat to the ground, he shuddered, the screams of the enemy played through his mind, the smell reminding him of the horror just across the field.
Kellar felt himself drifting, a nap would do him some good, he felt himself come awake and was surprised at the light. staring into the sky through the thin smoke of the battle he could see a column of thick black smoke drifting into the sky, that didn't look good. His eyes found A soldier who stood in front of him, it was the Sergent, Sergent Candice, or camera? the woman held someone on her back, she stares down at him for a long moment shifting from side to side.
Ahh, she must be scared of him, Kellar smiled, the woman was rather beautiful in his opinion, her harsh expression and the clear exhaustion didn't take away from her looks. Kellar found he was oddly drawn to this fierce woman. He paused trying to come up with something smart or funny to make her laugh. He said," What do you want?" Kellar inwardly slapped himself, what an idiot, how smooth.
The woman's face turned from nervous to angry, she said," I brought you your apprentice master Kellar, he passed out after doing his magic and won't wake up." Kellar's thoughts raced, she was mad, why was she mad? he just asked her what she wanted. He decided maybe she thought he was wasting her time? there was a lot to do after all.
Kellar stood his muscles groaning and popping, He said," let me see him, set him on the ground, we need the beds for the injured." Carley hissed, "He is injured" Kellar felt a cold sweat the woman's brows creased and her face turned hard, Oh crap what did he do?" He thought for a moment and decided she must be concerned for the boy.
Kellar waved at a passing soldier, He said" fetch me a bedroll on the double and a pillow too." A minute later he rolled out the wool bedding and helped the woman lay Reskeme on the wool mat and feather pillow. Kellar found his eyes constantly moving back to the woman, Her deep brown eyes and short black hair made him unable to keep from looking at her, the fresh cut above her left eye only added to the image.
Kellar felt a stinging pain on his cheek, He was startled, She slapped him? Carley said," stop staring at me it's just missing eyebrows." Kellar felt himself flush, he hadn't even noticed that, Kellar said," I wasn't staring at your missing eyebrows, I didn't even notice they were burned off." Carley said," don't waste time, what is wrong with him?"
Reaching down Kellar felt around the boy's neck until he found the mana gauge he pulled it soo they both could see he said," This is a mana gauge, it measures the amount of mana the boy can use." Carley said," but there is nothing in there." Kellar replied, "Exactly, The idiot channelled all of his mana foolishly into his attack and now appears to have backlash."
Carley's brow furrowed, She said," what does that mean?" Kellar sighed," he will be fine, he won't be able to use runes for a few weeks, but he should recover unless he does something stupid." Carley said," stupid? like what, he has been known for poor decisions." Kellar laughed, feeling a flush rise to his cheeks He said," well he has a strong stubborn bodyguard soo he will be fine, just don't let him use any magic for two weeks and he will be fine."
