Chapter 57

Reskeme crept through the trees, His clothes were forest green with dots of black and brown. He had painted his face and was following behind Carley, Following from the side he could only see her faintly, Her outfit blending in perfectly with the bushes. Reskeme froze, he felt a cool trickle of water slide down his neck, he shivered doing his best not to make a sound.

Reskeme felt chilled to the bone, his hands kept slipping on his naginata and his feet hurt, the drumming of the rain cut off most of the noise he was making. Soaked feet on a long hike really sucked, Reskemes fantasy of sitting in front of a warm fire was cut short as Carley gestured him forward.

Grumbling internally Reskeme crouched, Creeping from the protection of pine trees. The drizzle of rain immediately changed, the small amount of relief from the rain was immediately forgotten. Reskeme could hear his own feet squishing every step making an audible squelch.

The downpour intensified drenching reskeme once again, Ahead Reskeme could see the faint glow of a Fire, Reskeme wondered at that, apparently, the Darva hated the rain more than humans. He could see The faint glow of fire lite bouncing off the trees and hear the occasional crackle as he came into sight of two Darvan warriors lounging under a tree next to a small fire.

Reskeme wondered why the Darva was so sloppy, He and his squad were twenty steps away in throwing range of the Darva. Carley held up a Hand, She held up 3 fingers signalling that there were 3 Darva. Reskeme glanced back, Dusty Sculking to the left moving into position silent as always, like those damn alley cats.

The two Darva appeared to be sleeping, the Third was a scout, staring into the fire. Reskeme couldn't believe it these Darva were so unprepared for them. He understood why their confidence was high until this raid, until now humans had been terrified to fight the Darva at night.

Reskeme Firmed his grip crouching behind a tree and keeping an eye on the Darva, He was ready to attack if the enemy noticed one of his squad. Just when he thought They would set up a perfect attack, he heard a snap, The head of the Darvan scout shot up and it bore its long menacing teeth. Reskeme slid from behind cover planting his feet in the mud and threw his Naginata, The heavy spear travelled through the air and slammed into the side of the sleeping Darvan warrior.

Reskeme knew the warrior was much more dangerous than the scout and figured killing it in its sleep was better than fighting it. The warrior yipped trying to stand, The long blade of the naginata firmly stuck to the hilt. The scout reached for its sheath pulling a Javelin and turning to reskeme who was surprised at his killing strike.

The Darvan scout aimed and threw its javelin Reskeme unable to dodge felt the javelin as it brushed past his face, the point cutting into his cheek. His heart racing and his face numb from the pain and rain Reskeme snapped out of his stupor ducking behind a thick tree. Cursing his sloppiness Reskeme reached for his quiver pulling out a javelin, before crouching down and scrambling below cover before peeking out.

Where on Laurentia were his Squad? Reskeme could see The second warrior Dragging the injured one to cover and the scout holding a spear aiming at Reskemes previous position. Smiling to himself Reskeme leaned from cover throwing his javelin, The Darva caught his movement and Scrambled to the side trying to dodge.

Reskemes Javelin stuck into the top of The Darvas back, The Darva yelping and stumbling in pains slipped in the mud. Reskeme smelled blood, his hands started shaking, body pumping with adrenalin as he fumbled to grab another javelin. Reskeme heard a snap and the Darvan scout stumbled, taking the chance he threw his second javelin.

His steaming breath foggy as he panted, reskeme ran from tree to tree. The Darvan scout lay in the middle of the clearing twitching and whimpering, impaled by two javelins and an arrow. An earsplitting howl shook the clearing, the warrior running in Reskemes direction its claws shimmering with red runes.

Digging his javelin into the ground Reskeme prepared to meet the charging warrior, desperately gripping the wooden pole, the butt end digging into the muddy ground. The Darvan warrior stumbled, Reskeme thought it must be the mud making it slip when he saw the shaft of an arrow.

the warrior slid on its stomach, all of its built-up speed kept it moving forward as its legs collapsed under it. Reskeme cautions poked the Darvan warrior, The claws steaming and hissing as they dug into the mud. Dusty crept from the trees on Reskeme left He said," well that was a lucky shot, you hit its spine. Reskeme turn back to the Darva its eyes darted frantically but its body didn't move as though it wanted to but couldn't.

Dusty pulled out a long knife and thrust down, finding the gap and repeatedly stabbing in the Warriors' armour and puncturing its heart. Feeling shaken Reskeme look around the clearing, the drizzling rain mixing with mud and the pools of blood-forming from the dead. Blanching Reskeme finally felt the searing pain of his wound, reaching for his head he pulled away his hand covered in blood.

Dusty drew his sword and said," let's go find the last one." Reskeme followed Dusty until they rounded the tree to the Darvan warrior impaled by a naginata. Dusty sheathed his sword, his relief was very evident, the Darvan warrior was already dead its form much to still to be alive.

The large pool of blood mixing with the mud and grass, Reskeme reached down and pull the foot of steel from the side of the Darva. Dusty said," good throw," Reskeme replied,

I almost died, I'm such an idiot, I just stood there, I'm lucky that scout rushed his throw or it would be me dead." Carley rested her hand on Reskeme shoulder, he jumped in surprise, his naginata gouging the armour of the warrior as he was trying to remove the blood.

Reskeme scowled, he really needed to keep track of Carley, She had been doing her best to catch him off guard and sneak upon him. Reskeme wondered if she was working with his familiar as his familiar loved to startle him just like she did.

Carley said," well done, Our first scouting raid was a success." Dusty said," that is only because we haven't tried to invade their lands in years, and the Darvan scouts are getting lazy." Reskeme went to the other Darva, reaching down grasping the weapon, he pulled firmly on the slick shaft and couldn't get the point from the armour.

Reskeme sighed, he pulled some more placing his foot on the soft fur, leaning his weight into his pull, finally removing his weapon. The armour held it fast but Reskeme was determined, He really didn't want to leave his ruined javelin behind. Carley said," That is going to be all for tonight, lets head out and find some cover to watch the camp in case more scouts come to this camp.

Carley said," Let's drag the corpses to cover soo A Darva entering the clearing doesn't immediately know something is dead." Reskeme grumbled, They dragged the Darva corpses, he thought the heavy things stunk terribly. He hated the smell of wet dog, which is exactly what the Darva reminded him of.

Soaked and grumpy Reskeme crawled up a bank, the bank overlooked the trail leading to the clearing with the Darvan scouts. Reskeme Carley and Dusty huddled under a tree, Reskeme winced his face ached, he channelled his mana into his cheek creating a layer of mana over his cheek.

The green flame flashed, lighting his shrouded form for a moment, he gritted his teeth as his wound closed and a foul substance fell from the wound. Gagging reskeme run the back of his arm over his cheek wiping away the substance, at least the foul substance might scare away even the Darva with the horrible smell.

The drizzly night slowly passed, Reskeme felt drowsy he collapsed soaked and shivering wrapped in his damp blanket trying to get some sleep. In the morning Reskeme awoke sore and tired, The sky was still dark threatening more rain, at least under the thick tree it was mostly dry. Climbing to his feet Reskeme stretched before he rolled up his sleeping bag and gripped his naginata.

In the clearing beneath them Reskeme could see soldiers camping beginning to unset tents, Carley noticed his expression she said," the soldiers arrived after you fell asleep, they made good time only arriving a few hours after us. Reskeme asked," are we going down back to report to the commander?" Carley said," I went down when they arrived and reported."

Reskeme and his squad left the soldiers scouting ahead, clearing the way and checking for traps along the route. Reskeme trudged along, he stared down at his feet, hearing squish! squish! every time he took a step, his feet displacing the mud as he worked to stay on his feet.

Reskeme failed to pay attention to his squad leader, he didn't notice her sneak up from the side and grab him on the back. Reskeme slipped and fell landing on his butt his naginata falling from cold wet fingers, He held his mouth shut not yelling out or chastising Carley. Carley gestured to the smoke ahead, she said," don't get sloppy we are approaching an enemy camp."

Reskeme grumbled crawling to his feet bracing his hand in the wet mud and pushing up onto his tired legs. Reskeme look down the valley along the steep hill they were walking along, He could see the faint trickle of smoke ahead of them hidden amongst the rain. Under his cloak Reskeme was mostly dry the cloak had dried and should hold back the slight drizzle for a while, He was happy, walking while wet was not his idea of a good time.

Creeping through the rain-soaked foliage Reskeme peaked through the thick brush, he counted 10 warriors and 2 scouts, He could tell there were more, the Darva were separated by a copse of trees. He but didn't dare get closer to count them all, Reskeme retreated.

He had confidence that his squad would count the others and retreat as well, none of them were foolish enough to attack a group with that many. Carley whispered, let's return to the army with my 13 Dustys 10 and your 12 we will need to get a platoon to catch them by surprise.
