Capítulo 7: IV

"Hey, stop whatever you're doing and come here… ok, let me introduce you to Jorge Eduardo González Dávalos. From now on, he'll be on charge of the quality department. He'll take care of both the quality control and the implementation of the norm ISO 9001:2008 in the production area—and we really need it right now. So, if you have any questions about that, ask him.

The employees shook their heads and stared at Jorge with curiosity. Jorge glanced at each of the areas of the company. They were too big, and some of them had machines and equipment he had never seen in his life, and he had no idea what they were for or how they worked.

He then stared at me man beside him. He was Don Ernesto Gutiérrez, the company's owner and the one who hired him (but that was just because my dad is his friend and convinced him to. That was so humilliating. I never asked him for help; I can't get a job on my own, but it's not my fault everyone at HR are a bunch of stupid assholes who can't do their job.)

"Ok, go back to work," Don Ernesto said, and the employees resumed their jobs. "Come, Jorge. I'm going to tell you how this company works," Don Ernesto put a hand over Jorge's shoulder and took him to each one of the production areas. "As I already told you, we make cardboard, and the process is this one:

1. First, this big sheet goes to the corrugated to get this wavy form;

2. After that it goes through the gluing area, where two smooth sheets of cardboard are glued to it;

3. Then, goes to the stamping area, where it is cut and/or perforated;

4. And at the end it reaches the folding and stapling area, where the box is assembled.

"So, what you have to do is take one random unit of the finished batch and check each process was done successfully."

One employee approached Don Ernesto and gave him a finished box.

"Look," Don Ernesto started to check it, "Here you can see that the corrugated sheet has a certain volume—if it looks flat, it's badly made—the glued sheets don't move or come off, the cuts and perforations are straight and even, and the folding, gluing and stapling is done correctly. So this batch meets quality standards. And what you do next is take this sheet, and fill it out."

"Well," Don Ernesto patted Jorge's back, "I have to take care of something, so do your best."

Don Ernesto left.

Jorge headed towards a lonely desk in front of the production areas.

That was the quality department.

Jorge sat there, took out his laptop and opened the file about ISO 9001:2008 his old teacher sent him.

[ISO 9001:2008.jpg in the first comment]

"Hey, you, come here!" someone yelled. Jorge looked up and saw some employees calling him. He stood up and headed towards them."

"Hey," said another employee, "it' just that everyone's saying you look like Charli. Hey, Charli, come here!" he called someone from another area.

And said person approached and stood beside Jorge. Todos los presentes rieron con bastante descaro.

"Fuck yeah, they're like twins," said one of the employees.

"He looks like his dad, lol," said someone else.

"Let me take a picture," another employee took out his phone.

(What the fuck? Are you mocking me? You should be working.)

(And we don't look alike at all.)

But Jorge went back to his desk.

"Dude, don't get mad. We're just having fun."

"Yeah, and I don't know if you know, but here the new guys must buy everyone else a donut from doña Licha. She comes here every Thursday."

Some of the employees openly laughed.

"Hey, Jorge!" someone from another area yelled. "We finished a batch."

Jorge headed towards that area, took a random piece and checked it.

(What the fuck is this?)

The corrugated sheet was nearly flat, the other sheets peeled off easily, the cuts and folds were not completely straight, and the stapling was uneven.

(No wonder why they needed someone in the quality department.)

Jorge took one of the quality control sheets and started filling it up.

But, before he could write the reasons why no process fulfilled quality control in the observations, the employees immediately surrounded him.

"Wait, wait, what are you doing?"

They were more and more.

"The batch's fine, what do you mean?"

(That the batch's NOT fine.)

"It's just that the glue takes time to dry. Don't worry, it's fine."

(No, it's not fine. And besides, the box you showed Don Ernesto wasn't like that, and you had just done it, so the glue DOESN'T take time to dry.)

He was completely surrounded.

"I've been here for 20 years. This is how we make our job."

(So you've been doing it wrong for 20 years. And how can you say that when the box you gave to Don Ernesto was far better than this?!)

"Yeah, you don't know shit."

(At least I know more that all of you, because you don't even realize that batch is garbage.)

"It's just that, if we make the boxes the way we're supposed to, we won't have time to make them all."

(I rather fail meeting the demand than meeting it with this. No one would buy something like this.)

"We've always done it this way."

(So you've always done it wrong.)

The employees kept talking (and whatever they say, this batch doesn't fulfull the quality control. They have to do it all again, but how can I convince them? Is this going to happen every single day?)

(Is this how the rest of my life will be?)

The employees took Jorge's paper, threw it away and gave him a new one.

"You just write everything's ok and sign it," said one of them, who was getting mad.

(But if I do it and there's a problem it's going to be my fault, right?)

"Yeah, don't worry. I've been working here for 10 years, and nothing has ever happen to us."

(That's because you're always blaming the person in charge of the quality control. And, speaking of quality, how the fuck I'm going to implement that quality norm [ISO 9001:2008] if these people don't seem to like me and can't do anything right? And how do I implement that norm in the first place? Isn't it supposed to be only implemented by someone certified? Do I have to get that certification or something?)

(Well, right now I need to focus on knowing the ISO 9000 norm. Argue with these people isn't a priority right now, so…)

Jorge took their paper:

[QUALITY CONTROL 3.jpg in the first comment]

Then, he gave it to the employees and went back to his desk. He spent the rest of the day reading and rereading the file about ISO 9001:2008 file about ISO 9001:2008 his old teacher sent him.

The more he read it, the more certain he was that he had to transform the whole company on his own.

And that everyone was going to get in his way.

(I don't know if I can deal with all this.)
