If asked, Eve would say that she remembered a blur of faces. She lost track of the countless smiles directed her way. Her ears flooded with the latest gossip around the upper east side. It seemed that some customs of the past hadn't changed. Everyone seemed to know everyone…
… and she was the regular fish out of water.
Now, she learned that phrase meant more than being an outsider. It also pertained to how exhausting it was to keep up—much like how a fish found it hard to breathe when out of its element.
Eventually, the event planners moved everyone inside. The invited media had their time and were ushered out. Eve lost Avery in the crowd. People crammed between them until their hold on each other broke off.
She sighed, partly out of relief.
