I decided that sneaking out would be much safer. I arranged to have some of the less conspicuous boxes be near the exit in order to hide behind them. As long as they went inside and walked past me then I would be guaranteed a way out.
I then heard returning footsteps just as I finished the small preparations.
Tap. Tap.
The sound was slow and unhurried. Behind that person, I could hear two more following behind at the same pace. I assumed they were the driver and passenger from earlier. The man at the front definitely held more authority.
"Take it further in" I heard a cold voice command. The two footsteps behind him immediately got to work. They hopped in, started the truck, and drove slowly. Evidently we were making our way further in.
Not even a minute passed and I could hear the sound of an overhead door opening and closing. The truck then soon came to a stop. The two men exited and closed their respective doors.
"Alright, let's inspect this" The man spoke.
I wasn't too worried. I did my best to clean up even the blood on the floor using the boxes and whatever they contained inside. All types of packages usually have a bunch of junk in them, for once I was grateful for it. I stuffed it all into the lead box as nasty as it was.
The two doors were opened wide and I heard a metallic creek as I hid carefully. Bright lights illuminated the inside, not that it made a difference for me.
There was briefly no sound following that. I presumed the man took a glance around before I could hear him taking a couple of steps forward. The two men also got in and followed close behind.
I didn't waste any more time after hearing this and wrapped the lead box in energy as I meticulously left the safety of my box. The mask was one-sided as my energy couldn't cover its entirety. In a way, you could say I was performing a live test.
I left unhurried as to not reveal my presence. Yet, I didn't dare steal a peek back inside. I instead calmly yet quickly analyzed the new area to figure the best route of escape. The interior was like that of a garage. Apart from the truck, there wasn't much space.
I could see the closed overhead door and a regular door at the side. I obviously couldn't leave through the overhead one so I walked towards the regular metal door.
I grabbed its handle and found the door to be unlocked. I opened it slowly as to not make a sound and entered. The inside was a brightly lit hallway. It had all sorts of paintings and to my surprise even potted plants!
This place was elegant and rich! Nothing like the public library I knew of in the past. Of course, that wasn't really that surprising considering all the changes I had already seen. Is it something like finally recognizing reality? I don't know, I walked down the hall.
There was a fancy double door at the end. It was made of quite an exquisite wood and had a panel that allowed one to peer inside. The sight was quite magnificent.
Tall shelves packed to the brim with knowledge! The area was also being illuminated by a chandelier. I could see some people moving here and there calmly reading books as well. Unfortunately, I can't tell if they are exalted but I could only assume they were. Regular people wouldn't be able to access this place.
I didn't deliberate on anything and simply entered the room. Nobody even spared me a glance. Of course, that only made me happy. The only way to reduce my presence in the library is to read books!
So I went over to a secluded table and placed the lead box down on the floor somewhat out of sight.
This was a blessing in disguise. Kaiser had advised me against delaying matters as I could end up in the library but that was because I was only in grade one. Even if these people are exalted as long as they aren't past my own grade or I don't do anything too conspicuous they won't even know I came here.
There were cameras. But there was no reason for anybody to check them. The item wasn't stolen in the library and since I had been captured before there was no point in hiding. May as well act like a big shot that doesn't care right?
I headed over to a shelf labeled history. I saw many books dating back all the way to the roman empire and some talking about things like U.S. history.
Where are the relevant books I wondered as I continued to read the titles of the many books.
Then, one finally caught my eyes. The title read the establishment of the subterranean government. The cover was rather bland and the book was fairly hefty. Surely, this book would bring me to the brink of madness.
I sucked it up and grabbed the book while scanning for similar topics. There were no other relevant books as far as I could tell.
I went back to the table and read the contents. The framework was similar to what was stated on my phone. It just went deeper into the matter. For example, the subterranean government was more akin to a coalition.
None of the rich folks involved in it were willing to give up the chance to rule what remained of planet earth. Their only other option was to give everyone a position of equals. They are now known as the prosperity council and is ruled by the descendants of the 10 families.
This book was about history but it was last updated 20 years ago so the information is still rather relevant and true.
Anyway, the prosperity council operated on a majority vote to make and overrule decisions. This was what the ten great families found most fair.
With the passing of the years, the council was bound to see some changes. In particular, political parties started to form. The council only has 10 people though and nobody else has a say in the legislative process. Of course, the council members were essentially just representatives of the parties. Thus, there are only 3 erm 4 parties. One being the neutral party.
The first party is the reformation party. Their focus is to improve the daily life of the people and to create new advancements in technology. A basic and standard party that is for the interest of the people.
The next party is the planetal faction. This faction had the interest of planet earth in its mind. Their ultimate goal is the restoration of the forests and jungles that used to exist.
A tall order by all accounts. I mean, this was almost impossible to achieve when the earth was still green I can't imagine now. It is also one of the least popular parties, at one time it had only one representative in the council putting it at risk of disappearing.
The final one is the inquisition party, erm disquisition. They live by the I came, I saw, I conquered motto. Their focus is one military prowess and the exploration of the myriad wastelands. This one is usually the leading party ever since the discovery of Mutational Energy.
I didn't read the entire book, I only skimmed. Regardless this was all some pretty good information. When I checked my phone it was already 11:00 pm. Mostly everybody had left but the lights were still on. I guess the exalted don't have a real curfew.
I wonder how the prosperity council is handling the matter of the attacked company of soldiers...
Slightly longer, I was inspired to write even more! But if I did that I would be too lazy to write another chapter and miss a day again. I'll save that for the next chapter...
I write by using a chapter outline that usually entails up to 10 chapters ahead. Unfortunately, I haven't renewed it so there is only an outline for the next chapter. I should get that checked...
Thanks for reading~ Show me some love and leave me comments!
