Capítulo 21: Ain’t nothin but a heartache
And perhaps that's how hearts break sometimes. Unintentionally stabbing the other, having no idea how they have to struggle to pick themselves up while still having a reassuringly fake smile on them
Two teenagers, who were too afraid to love one another. Just unintentionally broke the other's heart.
"Is he okay?" My eyes were glued to his bright silhouette, slowly fading into the darkness, as he walked further and further away from us.
"Why's he being weird?"
My eyes linger on the trail for a while, even after he's left.
"So," I glanced up at her. Taking another sip, "When are you saying it to him?"
"What?" I make out, between my teeth and the straw.
"Alas. When will you tell him?" Her words suddenly drowned realization upon me, like a cold flash of water, drowning down onto me.
Resisting the urge to throw the soda I just took in, I place my hand over my mouth, avoiding any splashes. "I don't know.
Closing my eyes, I met with an overly excited Maria, who had a little tinge of worry in her, not quite noticeable, but it was there. "How to say it to him." Glancing down at my straw, I murmur "Or if I even should." Seriously, what if he's just into Oliva right now, which most likely seems like it? It'll be so embarrassing, and equally shameful to me, and our friendship. From what I know, once you get your love unrequited, it just ruins your friendship, no matter how hard you try not to affect anything. But the truth is, it does. There's only a small percentage of people who can come out of that awkwardness though.
But what if we don't fit into that group?
"Lisa, it's not like you are breaking the news of his pig dying, are you?" I giggle a little at how she manages to always lighten moods.
"But," she stops laughing and glances up at me. "Why do you think he doesn't like you?"
I stare at her, or more so at the reflection on the window beside her. "Olivia is a really pretty girl." And I am not even exaggerating. She is. Maybe Yorkshire girls are this pretty, naturally. "They have known each other for a long time, and. ." I pause, trailing off a little as I say, "They are close."
They are so much that it scares and saddens me. Were these two years so precious to him, that he got over us so soon? Did he really just find a better replacement for me?
"Why do you think he is closer to her than he is to you?"
I look back at her, startled. Why do I? "Because he just seems so relaxed around her."
"You mean he isn't relaxed around you?"
I stare at her, contemplating how to describe what I am feeling, or what I feel about this whole thing. A random girl coming into his life, him not talking much to us, so much so that he doesn't even inform us that he is coming here way earlier than he said he will.
"Maybe yes," I whisper.
"Lisa, you both have liked each other ever since we were kids." I glance at her, almost darting my eyes.
"We did?"
"Of Course duh," Rolling her eyes she continues, "I never brought it up, because you guys never took it that far. But, we all knew, We could just see it, in the ways you both look at each other."
I stare at her, wondering how oblivious we both were. Honestly, we didn't really pay much attention to what people thought of us. I didn't know at all they thought like that before this.
I look back at my half-emptied soda. "What if he really likes her?"
"What if he doesn't?" Maria shoots back. "Lisa you can't just say you can't fly a plane before ever even attempting to."
"But I have no experience. I've never flown a plane before."
"It's never too late to try. And trust me you will regret not trying," pausing, she emphasizes the last few words, "So damn bad,"
