I paused at the exit, mind still struggling to process all the changes in the world-the Universe-around me, when movement from the shadows near the doors caught my attention. Sass hissed like the cat he'd been, putting himself instantly between me and the lurking vampire who cackled at him for his attempt at protection. I kindly moved him aside, not only because I didn't need anyone to look after me but also out of the sudden need I felt to face this particular past head on.

"Batsheva Moromond." I kept my tone light but hollow, not wanting her to read anything into the greeting as the former queen of the Wilhelm Blood Clan slunk closer. She, like the other vampires in the castle, dressed in an elaborate gown, hers crushed crimson velvet with heavy lace at her wrists and plunging neckline. But, unlike the rest, she seemed disheveled, coiled blonde hair frizzy with escaped pieces, eyes wild around the edges.
