Capítulo 18: Chapter 17
Madam Vesser was true to her word. She was a strict teacher. Although Ellie didn't need much direction, as most of the tasks she was asked to do were already tasks she had done at home, there was still a lot to learn. Ellie spent the morning just her and Madam Vesser washing clothes and peeling potatoes. It was exhausting. They stopped for a break and Madam Vesser left the room. She came back in with a tray of food.
"Here child eat up. This Will be our lunch then we will go upstairs and clean the bedrooms."
They ate in silence. Ellie couldn't focus, she had questions she wanted to ask but wasn't sure where to start. They finished up and left. As they were heading upstairs there were more people dressed like her going backwards and forwards carrying out their various duties. Each one of them stopped to curiously look at her before hurrying off again.
"Just ignore them child they just have never seen others like you that's all. It will pass as time goes on."
They climbed the stairs and the old woman knocked on a door.
" You must always knock on any room before entering. Most of the family do not like to be disturbed so you can only clean when the aren't in."
There was no answer so they went inside and began to clean. The room was huge and took a while. The moved on to the next and the next and the next doing the same thing each time. Ellie was sweating. She looked at the old woman and wondered how she could do it. She didn't look tired in the slightest. She must have magical stamina Ellie thought. When They reached the last room they knocked again but this time there was an answer.
"Who is it?" a young man's voice travelled through the door. It sounded familiar.
"It's the maids young master here to clean the rooms."
"Just leave mine today."
"Very well. Good day sir"
And with that madam Vesser turned and headed back towards the stairs Ellie followed. She had the feeling of being watched again, as she looked over her shoulder she could see the bedroom door ajar slightly a pair of green eyes watching them leave. The rest of the day was spent cleaning and tidying the kitchen and washing dishes. There were others in the kitchen as they were doing this but they were avoiding her for some reason. After everything was done Madam Vesser led her back to her room and gestured for her her to change.
"You have done very well today, I'm pleased. These will be your duties everyday unless you are told otherwise by me or the master. I will supervise you for another 3 days until you get the hang of things, then I will let you attend these things on your own. Okay?"
"Yes ma'am"
"Good any questions?"
Her mind went blank everything she had been thinking about all day seemed to have been erased with all the work she had been doing. Oh well, she thought she could always ask questions tomorrow.
"No ma'am."
"James will be here soon to take you home you can just rest here until then. I must head out and attend some other things so just stay here until James comes."
"Okay"
And with that Ellie was alone in the room. She felt uneasy. Maybe It was because she was on her own in an unfamiliar place, maybe it was the way others were staring at her and avoiding her or maybe....those green eyes flashed her memory. They were warm but made her feel awkward. Perhaps she was reading to much into it. Someone knocked on the door. It must be James she thought. Her hands trembled and her knees went weak. What was happening...A voice in her head was telling her to hide, fear engulfed her she couldn't move she couldn't utter a sound..what was going on she tried to reach for the door...then everything went black...
