Sitting on the rough thread mat, facing the Demon figurehead, Xi Ken and Ser Vor, both of them greeted languidly, well more like Ser Vor wasn't as receptive as he had been with Wersi Wa.
I concluded that demons weren't pleasant to be around since it was an ongoing trope in most novels, demons were considered plagues and evil, which was... somewhat annoying. I really wanted to read a novel were the protagonist was a demon and a good Samaritan. Where angels were evil and where humans worshiped demons. ha ha
Sighing to myself, I took in the sitting posture of the people around, which was as stiff and straight as one would imagine. Even their face was stern, no one was speaking anything particularly sharp, but the gaze itself was laced with suffocation and scrutiny.
"He calls you Xi Zuen brother Xi, how did this come to be..." Yu Ken asked while side eyeing me, although he did not wait for the answer, instead hurried to change the subject, "brother He send me to you in advance, told me his underling might have gone ahead of time and disturbed you all, so I should be gentler and invite you all to take a detour. The miasma around Da Vui is almost on the verge of collapsing that town. Brother He could have taken it as an assignment, but you know how these days the darker forces are stronger... even brother He cannot handle so many assignments at one time."
"Even so, why are you here?" Xi Ken asked with a frown, which was not that scary seeing how lazy his tone of speech was.
"Did you not miss me?" Yu Ken asked with a sly grin, "we used to be so intimate before, now you react like this... because of him?" He made a point of turning to look at me, a mocking snarl on his red lips, the eyes a shade darker.
"Stop pretending to care, why are you here?" Xi Ken asked coldly, a sudden air of heavy aura reeking through his posture, it made everyone stiff with nerves.
Yu Ken glared at the other, "You can at least pretend to be hospitable, I am not your enemy am I?"
Xi Ken did not seem to mind the nagging, "You always come to me when there is trouble, just spill."
Yu Ken looked sullen all of a sudden, as if not expecting to be admonished over his selfish nature, but as if having practice in the art of regaining his bearing within seconds, he straightened up even more, puffing out his chest and holding on to his red fan, "The treasure door in my palace broke, we need an ink master to fix it, or else we wouldn't be able to guard it for long. You do have knowledge to what kind of a crowd lives around my land right?"
"Demons as always are too colorful with their lifestyle," Ser Vor spoke up, meddling with a sour face, even Hummer who was sitting next to me, a certain distance away from the gathering, coughed to hide his master's direct insult, a bit frightened.
Yu Ken snorted, glancing at Hummer and then pointedly looking at Ser Vor, "Even your disciple has more tact than you, is this how you receive a guest?"
Ser Vor did not apologize, he looked rather peeved.
"We aren't here to fight," Xi Ken took over before a war could start, "I will make a visit when we are done with Da Vui, until then you will have to hold on your own fort."
Yu Ken looked satisfied, "I will leave right away then, just make sure you do not go back on your words."
"Do I look like those who do?" Xi Ken asked with a blank face, to which Yu Ken chuckled, "No..."
"And also..." he shared another look with me, making me sweat a bit with cold shiver, "make sure you protect him well brother Xi, Ra Ven is rather lacking in the head, a bit more maturity would do him good."
My eyes twitched as Xi Ken sighed, "Don't meddle, leave."
Yu Ken laughed, greeted a goodbye to everyone with a head nod and blurred out into vanishing in thin air. Either he was too fast in moving around... or he used some... sort of spell to vanish.
"Why do you always entertain him Ken," Ser Vor picked up his resentment to direct his anger at Xi Ken, "he is just using your powers without giving anything in return."
Xi Ken did not reply, but I was more annoyed at being called 'lacking in the head'. I hadn't done anything to that Yu Ken, then why was I labeled 'lacking'? Surely I could understand Ser Vor's negative view of the person and also why most novels depicted demons as annoying.
But such provocation did not mean I would revoke my thinking about desiring to read a novel with demons as heroes. ha ha
"He will help me when I want him to," Xi Ken answered, "for now I understand that helping him is a good deed."
After that, Ser Vor talked to Xi Ken in private and Hummer and I were left to sit alone in the outer hall.
"That Yu Ken, I did not seem to find anything threatening about him," I told Hummer, who was listening to me as soon as I spoke. Like something he recalled came to his mind, but he did not try to change the topic, he seemed to find my conclusion funny.
"Superior beings are like tigers hidden as pigs, you won't know they are strong until they want you to feel that way." Hummer responded, "If Zuen Ken wanted to show his strength, he would have, but we already know his strength, so him suppressing us without cause would seem rather awkward."
[A/N - Since He, Xi and Yu are all Ken, if Zuen is added to their names, it would turn to Zuen Ken, that is why Hummer calls Yu Ken as Zuen Ken which is also what he calls Xi Ken.]
"Your master doesn't seem to like Yu Ken..."
Hummer shrugged, "Believe me, my master holds grudges quite well, so people rarely infuriate him. Only Zuen Ken long time ago killed his pet bird and since that day my master started to hate him and his kind."
Was having a grudge over a bird so important to hold on to? I couldn't think of it as a very mature act... well thinking of that word 'mature', I frowned. "That Yu Ken insulted me for not being mature, lacking in the head, what rubbish, do I look lacking?" I complained to Hummer, pointing at myself.
Hummer snickered a while later, making me scowl, "Ha Ha, sorry, but you do not look threatening at all, like maybe a bit more seriousness on you would look better, but your behavior borders that of a teenager."
I pouted, "I... what can I say..." I was always pampered by parents and despite facing sneers for being 'strange' I was a shut in 'otaku' one could say, but unlike 'otaku' I wasn't very keen on worshiping idols or characters, I was someone who was a fanatic of a few art works, anime and manga, also a few novels but not to an extent where my whole life revolved around such things. I was like an average person with a few favorites, which made me happy and involved in free time.
I also wasn't as serious as a few of my colleagues were, I did take my work and study seriously, but I never aimed at having a very severe and heavy aura. My work ethics was good, but I lacked that mature appeal which many had. Like what did people call it...? Mental age? Mine was probably very young. Maybe I was always dependent on my parents to ever seriously think about collecting money or looking for jobs. Even my side job as a bus boy was taken just for earning extra pocket money.
My college fees was paid by my parents, which I think was an Asian thing...? Because in America parents mostly weren't the same as mine, I heard many of my colleagues worked hours to save money for their tuition fees. Or maybe it wasn't the case everywhere, but I knew I was lucky... except for not having many friends, I had no such setbacks which could make me experience hardships... my only hardship was in the socializing field where I tried to please others and had an introverted personality, but other than that I couldn't recall anything else which would make me take a hard hit.
If thinking in that sense, my problems seemed... childish. Many people had more severe setbacks, they lost their homes, jobs, or maybe...limbs if they were involved in accidents, but what did I not have? I wasn't popular, children made fun of me, so I was mostly a shut in... but aside from that... there was nothing major. Yes I saw spirits, but then, that wasn't a very big setback...?
Coming to Zor En could be counted as one, but then I met Xi Zuen, and because he cared for me, my feelings of anxiousness and distress did not bother me all day long, they got suppressed since Xi Zuen promised me of my return home.
Hummer patted my shoulder as if he saw my inner monologue, "Even I am not that mature, whatever that means, You don't need to worry about something so insignificant, you don't need to be mature to live your life, just enjoy it, if hardships come your way, tackle them... otherwise I like you as you are. You are..." he blushed a bit, "a bit cute one can say, like very... innocent types. I don't know..."
I coughed slapping his hand away, "Aren't you calling me a child then?"
"Not really," he mumbled, "I think you are very strong, you are travelling with Zuen Ken and you can retort back a reply even to people whom I could only stammer at... you also are very thoughtful and rarely try to pick fights... I think that kind of personality is rather hard to find. I think that is why Zuen Ken keeps you around."
I rolled my eyes, although a bit flattered that Hummer thought good things about me, "I don't really know Xi Zuen's reasoning and all, I only know that he sees potential in me," and I did not say that I was even liked by a person like him. Hummer might not believe me.
"Well, aside from that," Hummer chuckled, "you shouldn't take to heart what everyone thinks about you, pleasing them isn't your life goal, just be respectful."
I nodded, and suddenly, the door to the hut opened, two bold figures appeared. They weren't familiar but both were female, were scantily dressed and cute. Like dolls wearing seductive ancient robes full of red laces.
"Master Yu Ken asked us to capture you," they spoke in a strange unison, "and bring you to the palace until senior master Xi Ken fulfills his promise, so please come with us... Ra Ven."
I shivered, as even before I could call out to Xi Zuen or take help of Hummer, my vision blurred and when I opened my eyes again, I found myself in another place, totally different from before.
The cold paved floor beneath my naked feet was dark in color, almost black, and the walls were also the same, just more rougher.
Looking around I noticed that it was a very dark room where only a single torch was burning at the center, and the two alluring red robed females held me by arms on both sides, my knees almost buckling.
In the shadow, I saw myself looking at a silver haired male, with dark iris. His face pale and robes a familiar red.
Yu Ken smiled, "Welcome to my palace Ra Ven. Sorry to be so bothersome."
I gulped, shivering in the cold of the room, the heavy aura around me keeping me from showing my irritation.
Only a second back I was thinking I faced no setback, so if coming to Zor En wasn't a setback in my heart, than was this the setback I had been looking for?
I could only curse myself for jinxing my luck.
AuthorChats : Why is it that I can no longer read a good romance novel and feel the feels? Like when the girl kissed her man, I felt nothing, I was just chewing on the bubblegum in my mouth, thinking, 'okay, moving on, what happened to the plot?', lol, this whole yaoi deal in making me immune to hetro relashionships! Ha ha ha~
