Capítulo 845: Working your magic
The duo make their way to the large entrance of the mansion and are stopped yet again but guards standing next to it, however, Mathias was able to keep up his story of being an undercover representative of the Holy Empire. The guards doubt him at first, but after showing some magic they lead him towards the Lord of the manor, both still alert and ready to strike should he prove to be an imposter.
They knock on the door slowly three times, and after a moment a voice calls them through the door, "Enter."
The group push their way into the room and are greeted by a skinny bald man sitting behind a large wooden desk, he raises a brow at them as he doesn't recognise them at all...
Mathias glances around the room for a moment to check for any traps or additional guards, noting that the room didn't actually have all that much decorating it, at least, not much considering this was the ruler's office.
Bartosz "Greetings strangers, I am Bartosz of Ichor." he greets nonchalantly.
Mathias steps forwards, "I am Mathias and this is my companion Barnock. We've come to help catch the perpetrators abducting people in your territory."
Bartosz "Hm? I've already received a Witcher from the capital, who sent you?" he asks, already suspicious of them.
Mathias "The Arch-Mage Harry Potter. I am a Mage myself and thought you could use help dealing with magical means, especially considering all other attempts at capturing the criminals has proven ineffective." he states.
Bartosz nods "I think we could use sommore help, do you have any identification?"
Mathias shakes his head, "We were sent out in a rush and told to stay undercover, the only thing I have is this compass that the archmage gave me." he says, presenting it to Bartosz takes it and nods.
Bartosz "Deffinitely looks like something that pompous teen would make... 'Specially since it doesn't seem to work." he remarks as he watches the pointing spin around rapidly and randomly. He slides the compass back and nods, "As I have no solid confirmation that you're really who you say you are, I'll be personally accompanying you, is that acceptable?" he asks.
Mathias manages to keep a frown from his face when he hears this and quickly starts thinking about whether he could work this into his plans... It wasn't like they weren't going to try and capture the abductor, so him following them would only add credibility. He nods after a moment and gives a small smile, "It is, however, I hope you'll listen to my orders when it pertains to magic, it'd be bad for everyone if you exploded or something similar."
The guards behind Mathias tense at hearing this, it was close enough to be threat for them to be wary... That is, until Bartosz starts laughing uproariously.
Bartosz "Hahahahaha! I'll have you know I 'ave no problem with "exploding" hahaha!"
...
Mathias and Barnock just shrug as the man laughs, wondering if they'd missed the joke or something.
Bartosz eventually calms down and wipes a stray tear from his eye, "Hehe... Thanks for that, I've not laughed that hard in a while. But... We'd best be getting to work, it's a few hours til dusk and I'd bet this mansion on those fuckers trying to take more kids." he says, getting up from his seat and strapping a fine-looking curved sworn onto his side. The duo hadn't noticed it until now, but the man was wearing grey robes plated in dark metal... They resembled the armour they'd seen worn in Ichor but slightly different.
He walks over and pats the two on their shoulders, guiding them to the door, "Mathias, I wonder if you know any ways to create magical traps?" he asks, bringing a smile to the Mages face.
Mathias "I think in this case, it's better to show than tell."
The group make their way down to the first floor and head towards the courtyard within the manor, Mathias can see it through the windows as they walk, the whole place is surrounded by guards, and a large group of children are waiting in the middle. Most look afraid and tense, though some of the more oblivious ones are content to fool around and play with one another.
They walk out of the building into the courtyard and Mathias scans the area. The courtyard itself is surrounded by the manor to allow the residents the opportunity to walk around a garden without leaving the property.
He notes the many stern faces of the guardsman in the windows on the higher floors looking down at them, clearly Bartosz wasn't taking any chances when it comes to the safety of these children.
Barnock "Your defences are impressive, is it not expensive to keep so many guards at the ready?" he asks.
Bartosz nods, "It is, but they're the ones who offered to help defend the children, they wished to do it for free at first but there work must not go unpaid, especially since they're doing it with good and honest intentions... In the past finding people with morals like that was rare, nowadays it seems the good is allowed to come out from people." he says with a sincere smile.
Mathias "You have good men... Shall we get started laying the traps?" he asks, having located a number of spots that'd prove effective in defending this place.
Bartosz glances at him, "Tell me of what you will be doing first, it might not interact well with the other provisions I have prepared.
Mathias rubs his face, "I'll be laying Statis Traps near the entrances and windows leading into the courtyard, they'll lock someone who triggers it in place for 10 seconds, enough time to capture or kill them."
Bartosz "What if one of us or my men walk over it?" he asks cautiously.
Mathias "Nothing, anyone I consider an ally will not be able to unintentionally activate it."
Bartosz "That's quite convenient..." he mutters, "Well? Get to it then, night's approaching."
