Listening to Stuart and Madame's conversation and the way they spoke to one another, Edie began to worry. She tilted her head and looked at Stuart. 'If my mother ever spoke to me in this manner, it would have broken my heart! But he acts as though nothing is wrong?' Edie stood there and listened to the two argue back and forth. 'Stuart's like a rock, he never has ups and downs, but I feel like I'm riding an emotional roller coaster, upon minute, down the next. Is this what our marriage is going to be like when his mother is around?' Countless thoughts ran through her mind. Edie was worried about him, but she did not dare speak. She was about to move her hand when suddenly he gripped it tightly, startling her. She could see confusion and panic in the dark depths of his eyes. She stroked the back of his hand with her thumb and repeated the reassurances.
