Capítulo 15: Disappearance
Shastri was silent for a while and asked, "How did she go missing?
"Well, she has been in a weird mood as she had come from the semester holidays. We thought she wuld be missing her parents. She would also go out from time without her friends. That is when we started to get suspicious. But when we tried to ask her about it, she deliberately tried to change the subject or cry. So we had to stop talking with her."
"It was night of around two weeks ago. After dinner we were all seated. Some were discussing regarding the college schedules and some girls were gossiping. It was common thing for us", Vimala said, somewhat flustered.
"Continue" Shastri said, not seeming bothered.
Seeing that, Vimala took a sigh of relief and continued," After that when it was time for our hostel dorm to close, we noticed that Nikhita had not come yet. So we said the dorm supervisor to wait for her. It was past 12'O Clock, but there was no sign of her. At that time we began to panic. The dorm supervisor came and asked us if we knew anything. Apart from her unusual behavior from the past two weeks we had no idea about her at all. Then Nikhita's parents were informed, but they said that she had not been to home also. Then we informed the police."
At that time, they noticed the tea that had been ordered by them. The tea was getting colder. So they began drinking the tea.
After drinking, Vimala resumed her story," The police came to the dorm and searched for clues. We were also questioned. But beside her weird behavior, we had nothing to say. It has been two weeks since then and they are still searching. No leads have been found in the case."
"Any ransom call to the home? Sometimes for child's wellbeing the parents may not inform police" shastri asked.
"Her parents have visited the hostel about three times since then. They have also asked us regarding her. So I don't think that they have got nay ransom call."
"Any stalker problem? "
"No. In college we girls go together and come back together. So even if some guy wanted to follow us, he would have suffer wrath of all girls in the group. It is a self-defense mechanism. Because of that, many girls were opting for our hostel. Infact, we were increasing the revenue of our hostel." Vimala said sounding proud of herself.
"How was she in college? Whether she was good in sports and academic studies?" Shastri asked.
"Yeah. She was very good in the subjects. Many subject teachers were praising her. She herself wanted to be a teacher. She would also explain the lessons if we couldn't understand. I thought after we graduated she would sought by many institutions. We often joked about that too....." Vimala said with her face looking downcast.
"Hey, don't be so sad. We will try our level best to find her soon. Anyway we also have our best detective on board right?" Viraj said, trying to reassure her.
Shastri sat motionlessly, without saying anything.
"You are on board right?" Viraj asked nervously, seeing that there was no response.
"You said your colleague was working in this case, right? Did he get any leads on the case?" shastri asked nonchalantly.
"Well, no sir. Apparently he was also thinking that this was an open and shut case. But now he is feeling very discouraged. He even called me and asked if vimala had said something to me"
"But I have said everything I know brother. Why should I hide something about her?" vimala said feeling aggrieved.
"Now, Now….no need to feel sad. It is that, he is just desperate. He has also been getting pressure from higher ups to solve the case" Viraj assured his sister.
"Did they check railway stations and bus stations?" Shastri asked.
Yeah… as soon as we called the police, they had already notified the surrounding railway station and bus stops. And then the family had also announced a reward for whomever helps to find their daughter. But no one has come forward as of now" viraj said.
Shastri began pondering. Viraj and vimala looked at him tensely.
"Actually last time I should not have interfered while you were doing the investigation. But I was just a tad bit curious. You see my brother had told me much about you. He said you were a great example of how an ideal police officer should be" vimala said with adoration in her eyes.
"I am not an ideal police officer. That is why I left the job. As of now I am just an ordinary consultant who has not been paid for the previous service given. So if you want me in this case I demand 50% of advance and 50% later the job. I am also trying to work and save some money. So no need to appeal on my humanity" Shastri said looking at vimala sternly.
Then he turned to viraj,"Actually this case has some points that have interested me. Can you give me your colleague's phone number? I have some questions with him regarding the case."
Viraj was stunned. "Sir, you mean that you are going to investigate?"
"Did you think I am asking your friends number for chatting purpose?" shastri asked.
"No sir. I did not mean that", said Viraj a little flustered. Then he opened his mobile phone" Well sir, my friend's name is Praveen. He is the inspector in Varthur circle police station. He was with me in my previous police station. As my sister was also one of the witness he had contacted me. He has also heard a lot about you."
"It's ok. I will collect more information of the case from him. Meanwhile just think of closing of the accident case and giving me the consultancy fee."
"Ok, Sir" said Viraj a little embrassed. He felt he had made shastri annoyed because of his loose tongue.
"Ok then. I think I have collected enough information. For further details I will contact Mr. Praveen. So can you make an arrangement for me to go home?" Shastri asked.
"Yeah, I will go and make arrangement for that" Viraj went to call the rickshaw.
Suddenly Vimala turned to Leela ," Who are you miss?"
"My name is leela. I am neighbor of Shastri." Leela answered smiling.
"Oh. I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Vimala, I am sister of Mr.Viraj. Shastri helped him in a case before."Vimala said.
"Oh yes? We have mango plantation near our house. Shastri said the mangoes were good"
Shastri felt the atmosphere getting somewhat heavy. Not wanting to be entangled by it, he said" I have forgot cow fodder. You can wait for me near Rickshaw" Then without waiting for leela's, reply he began walking.
Both of their argument could be heard even when shastri was turning to the corner.
