In her mind, the most possible person was Lie Fan as he controls Xu Province and Xiapi was his seat of power, but it is still a possibility as there could be other people who could possibly only use Xiapi as a first stop. After a few hours of rest and resupply, Wang Yi gathered her followers. "We cannot linger here for long. Our enemies are relentless, and we must stay ahead of them. We head for Xiapi immediately."
Wang Yi and her followers hastily packed their belongings at the Serenity Inn in Chang'an. Their room in the inn's peaceful facade belied the urgency of their situation.
Under the cover of darkness, they slipped out of Chang'an and began their journey to Xiapi. The roads were quiet, and the air was thick with anticipation each step brought them closer to safety.
Meanwhile, in Qiao, Lie Fan stood in the main hall of Qiao's Governor Castke, flanked by his advisors Jia Xu and Xun You alongside Zhang Liao and Gao Shun. The room was filled with a sense of urgency as they discussed their next move.
Lie Fan addressed his advisors, his voice steady but filled with determination. "We have done well in consolidating our control over Qiao, but the threat from Cao Cao's Army is imminent. Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin are formidable opponents, and our defenses must be up to the challenge."
Jia Xu nodded in agreement. "That's right My Lord, Qiao's defenses are strong, but they will not hold forever against a prolonged siege. We must be proactive and consider our next steps carefully."
Xun You added, "We also need to ensure that our supply lines in Qiao remain secure. If we are cut off from our resources, our position will quickly become untenable."
Zhang Liao and Gao Shun, both seasoned generals, shared a glance before Gao Shun spoke up. "Perhaps it is time to take the fight to them, rather than waiting for them to bring it to us. We have the advantage of knowing their likely approach."
Lie Fan considered their words carefully. After a moment of contemplation, he made his decision. "We cannot afford to be passive. We will leave Qiao and take direct command of the Qilin Army to meet them head to head, everyone prepares the Qilin Army to ensure its readiness and the Qiao defense army to at least have a decent combat challenge to defend Qiao."
Jia Xu and Xun You nodded their heads in agreement, their expressions resolute. "We will ensure that Qiao's defenses and its defenders have adequate combat power to protect the city, My Lord," Jia Xu promised.
Xun You added, "We will coordinate with the local militia and train them to hold the lines effectively to ensure that Qiao will not fall easily."
Zhang Liao and Gao Shun, ever the reliable generals, responded with equal determination. "We will make sure the Qilin Army is ready to head out as soon as possible, My Lord," Zhang Liao said. "Our supply lines will be secure, and our troops will be well-prepared for the confrontation."
Lie Fan nodded, satisfied with their resolve. "Then we move swiftly and decisively. The Qilin Army must be ready to march by dawn tomorrow. Ensure every soldier is equipped and motivated. We have no time to lose."
As the preparations commenced, the Qilin Army was a hive of activity. Soldiers checked their weapons and armor, and supplies were loaded onto carts. The air was thick with anticipation, each man knowing the critical importance of the coming battle.
Back in the main hall, Jia Xu and Xun You worked tirelessly to bolster Qiao's defenses. They reviewed fortification plans, allocated resources, and trained the local militia, transforming the city's defense into a formidable force.
Zhang Liao and Gao Shun oversaw the final preparations of the Qilin Army. Under their watchful eyes, the soldiers conducted drills and rehearsed their formations. The supply lines were meticulously planned, ensuring that the army would remain well-fed and well-equipped throughout the campaign.
As dawn approached, the Qilin Army stood ready, a disciplined and formidable force. Lie Fan, mounted on his horse Pangu, addressed his troops. "Today, we march to meet the enemy head on. We fight not just for Qiao, but for the future of our land. We will show Cao Cao's men the strength and resolve of the Qilin Army. Onward to victory!"
Under Lie Fan's leadership alongside Zhang Liao and Gao Shun, the Qilin Army began their march leaving Qiao. As the Qilin Army marched westward from Qiao toward Xuchang, Lie Fan found himself deep in thought. The differing strategies presented by his trusted advisors weighed heavily on his mind.
Jia Xu and Xun You, riding in their carriages behind the main force, approached Lie Fan. Jia Xu spoke first, his tone measured. "My lord, we must consider the strength and numbers of Cao Cao's forces. Building fortifications and creating strong defensive positions will allow us to minimize our casualties and make the enemy come to us on our terms."
Xun You nodded in agreement. "An encampment would provide us with a secure base from which we can launch controlled strikes. It would also allow us to scout and gather intelligence on the enemy's movements."
Lie Fan listened carefully, considering their words. He then turned to Zhang Liao and Gao Shun, who rode on either side of him and also had their own opinion in mind.
Zhang Liao was the first one to speak up. "My lord, while a defensive strategy has its merits, I believe an open field battle would be more advantageous. Our soldiers are well-trained and disciplined. We can use our mobility and tactics to outmaneuver the enemy."
Gao Shun, nodded his head supporting Zhang Liao's words, and added, "An open field battle allows us to strike decisively. We can catch them off guard and deliver a crushing blow before they have a chance to fortify their positions. Waiting too long could allow Cao Cao's forces to consolidate and reinforce."
Lie Fan found himself at a crossroads. Both strategies had their strengths and potential pitfalls. He knew that the decision he made now would significantly impact the outcome of the coming confrontation.
After a moment of contemplation, he spoke. "Both strategies have their merits, and each carries its own risks. Jia Xu, Xun You, your suggestions for fortifications are wise, and we should indeed consider minimizing our losses. However, Wenyuan and Gao Shun's confidence in our army's capabilities in open battle is also compelling."
With a resolute expression, Lie Fan continued, "We will adopt Wenyuan and Gao Shun's strategy. We will take the offensive. I am also itching for some action. Prepare the men for battle. We will meet Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin head on."
Hearing Lie Fan's choice, Jia Xu and Xun You exchanged a glance and then nodded, accepting their lord's decision. Their minds quickly shifted to crafting offensive strategies that would complement Lie Fan's bold approach.
They knew their roles would now be to provide tactical support ensure that their offensive moves were as effective and efficient as possible, and reduce their casualties as much as possible.
Zhang Liao and Gao Shun, on the other hand, beamed with pride. "Thank you for your trust, my lord," Zhang Liao said. "We will bring you swift victory over Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin!"
"We will ensure that our army fights with the strength and precision needed to overwhelm the enemy, My Lord. I will personally coordinate with the others," Gao Shun added, his determination evident.
With that, a day passed, filled with the final preparations for the impending clash. The Qilin Army marched with renewed vigor, their spirits high and their minds focused on the battle ahead. Oriole agents keep Lie Fan and Jia Xu up to date with Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin's Arny movement.
Finally, the moment arrived. As the Qilin Army crested a hill, they saw the vast expanse of Cao Cao's forces arrayed in the distance. Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin had arranged their troops into battle formations, ready to meet Lie Fan's army.
Lie Fan, riding his horse Pangu, raised his halberd high. "Qilin Army, form your ranks!" he commanded. The soldiers swiftly moved into their designated positions under the leadership of their commander, their discipline and training evident in their precise movements.
Across the field, Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin watched as the Qilin Army formed up. Xiahou Dun, with his eye patch marking him as a veteran of many battles, turned to Yu Jin. "It seems Lie Fan has chosen to fight us directly. This will be a bloody battle for us since Lie Fan has chosen to meet us head on."
Yu Jin nodded, his expression serious. "We must not underestimate them. Lie Fan's reputation is well-earned, combined with the generals such as Zhang Liao alongside him increasing their threat."
Both armies entered their formations, the tension between them thick in the air. The soldiers on both sides exchanged grim looks, knowing the battle ahead would be fierce and unforgiving. Lie Fan, mounted on his horse Pangu and flanked by five of his most trusted bodyguards, surveyed the battlefield.
Lie Fan received word that his army was ready. With a determined expression, he raised his halberd high, the signal for the war drums to sound. The rhythmic beating echoed across the field, marking the start of the battle.
Lie Fan led the Tian Mao Battalion alongside Xu Rong, their horses thundering forward as they charged toward Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin's army. The infantry line, commanded by Gao Shun and Mi Fang, followed closely behind, their disciplined ranks moving with precision.
Xiahou Dun, seeing the charge, shouted to his men, "Brace yourselves! Hold the line and prepare for the impact!"
Yu Jin, beside him, ordered the archers to release a volley of arrows aimed at the approaching cavalry. The sky darkened momentarily as the arrows flew, but the Qilin Army's charge was relentless.
Lie Fan skillfully maneuvered his horse, combined with his excellent halberd skills in deflecting the arrows, managed to evade the arrows and push forward.
The clash of the two armies was thunderous. Lie Fan, with his halberd, cut through the enemy ranks, his bodyguards close at his side. Xu Rong's glaive found its mark repeatedly, his precise strikes taking down soldiers left and right.
The Tian Mao Battalion, inspired by their leaders, fought with unmatched ferocity and strength, intimidating Cao Cao's infantry that received the bulk of the impact.
Gao Shun and Mi Fang led the infantry into the fray, their men moving in coordinated formations to counter the enemy's defense. Gao Shun's expertise in siege warfare translated well to the open battlefield as he directed his troops to break through the enemy's lines. On the other hand, Zhang Liao prepares the cavalries in the flank, lying in waiting to exploit an opening that will be opened by Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin's Army.
