"Unborn child?!" Katherine Bradford shrieked. She stared at the nurse with her eyes as wide as they could stretch. More than all the information she had heard since she had woken up, this was as if a thunderbolt came striking into her life.
The nurse immediately realised that she wasn't aware of this news. She began explaining. "When we tested your blood samples, you even showed positive for pregnancy. Didn't you know about it?" The nurse enquired.
"Pregnancy… Positive…."
"Pregnancy… Positive…."
"Pregnancy… Positive…."
The nurse's words began ringing in Katherine Bradford's ears. "No! This can't happen!" She covered her mouth with her hands and shook her head in disbelief. She was sent reeling backward. Her brain was desperately scrambling to make sense of it all. She asked the nurse, "How far along have I come?"
"You're mostly two and a half to three months pregnant. I'm not sure since we didn't particularly carry out any of your detailed pregnancy test." The burden answered.
Katherine Bradford very well knew that it was Adam's child. She wasn't in a physical relationship with anybody else other than Adam Clive. She badly wanted to convey this news to him. She knew his number by-heart. She picked up the phone kept on her bedside table and dialled his number.
"Hello!" Adam Clive's voice sounded from the other end.
"Adam!" Katherine Bradford cried yet again helplessly.
"Kate! Kate please don't ever call or talk to me ever again. My dad bailed me out on one condition that I should never remain in touch with you." His voice was a whisper.
"But Adam listen to me… I need to tell you something very important…" Katherine Bradford begged.
"Only if you listened to me that day. Didn't I ask you to use the drug carefully? Adam Clive questioned her sternly.
"Yes Adam! B-But…" She was left hanging midway when Adam Clive interrupted her.
"Also we had decided not to provoke Jayne Roy for her possible connections with Ronnie Roy! Do you know she's actually Ronnie Roy's most loving, doting wife… And we all ended up like this only because of your arrogant, egoistic pride to project yourself more superior than Mrs Roy!" Adam Clive was such a clever fox. He slowly shifted the entire blame on Katherine Bradford like as if he had no role in anything whatsoever.
Katherine Bradford had almost reached her saturation of listening to all the news for the day… "Jayne Roy is Ronnie Roy's wife?" She asked him again.
"She's Mrs Jayne Ronnie Roy!" Adam Clive uttered clearly.
Truth be told, Katherine Bradford, now felt like she'd got the ultimate death blow at the moment. She remained frozen like a statue. Her face was stuck in an incredulous expression. She opened her mouth to speak something. But, immediately closed it again. Her shoulders were hunched together like as if she was trying to disappear into herself.
She badly wished to have possessed a time machine, so that she could go back and undo that fateful night. If not for that one party, everything would just be the same. Just one fateful night caused such an irreversible effect on her life.
She was so lost in her thoughts that she'd not even realised that Adam Clive had long before hung up on her. She simply held on to the receiver with the line gone dead.
After a while when she finally snapped out of her thoughts and placed back the receiver. She just snapped her eyes shut unable to think of what to do next.
The nurse spoke again. "If you're unable to find someone to bail you out, you have your rescue option right in your tummy!"
Katherine Bradford flew open her eyelids. She subconsciously touched her tummy. "Tummy?" She asked the nurse.
"Yes! You heard me right. Since you are pregnant right now, you can plead before the court that your health conditions have deteriorated. You can use that as a bargaining chip and won't be sent to prison. You can be out on Medical Parole and continue to stay here at the hospital. In that way, you can buy some time and think about what you should be doing next." The nurse took extreme pity on her and came up with a plan.
Katherine Bradford very well knew that she couldn't keep this baby.
Firstly, she was still a twenty year old girl. A child without marriage at this point was a strict no no.
Secondly, she was still within the safe period of getting the baby aborted.
Thirdly, if the news of her pregnancy broke out, her father, who has already broken ties with her, would never ever forgive her for life. She could as well forget about him accepting her back as his daughter.
But then, the same unborn child was her only saviour right now. She was in a dilemma on what she should be doing now.
Still, Katherine Bradford agreed with the nurse's idea. She applied for a petition before the court. Her case was yet to be scheduled. So, she continued to remain in the hospital.
