Finishing all Kaiser's preparations, we had waited at the gates. The flow of the traffic was sparse as the sun was already setting down. With a crevice protruding off the wall, I had sat on it holding Kaiser's helmet ontop of my lap. It took a while of begging for him to hand over his helmet. Seeing a speck of dirt on the helmet I had rubbed it off. The act of rubbing it had strangely calmed me down. If I was a ball of misfortune then I'll pass it on but this was going to be my new hobby.
"What If Ene doesn't show up?"
"We'll wait a little bit longer but we really need to head out before complete dark."
"Isn't it ok If we wait one more day for her?"
His face sharpened and he grumbled. I didn't want to leave a friend behind. It was rare to make an actual friend.
"Well I suppose we can."
A distinct metal noise clanked together from around the corner of a nearby building. A familiar figure approached straight towards us. All parts were covered by armor except his hands. His hands were a sturdy leather. In his left hand, was a kite shield with engravings. In his right hand was a mace with a morning star attached to it. The armor had scratches on it and it wasn't too flashy, the only flashy parts were the star shapes on his pauldrons, elbows, and tasset. The armor was dark grey and some sections of it illuminated white light. A feint illumination could be seen coming out of the crevices. Cloth was hanging in the tasset area, blocking the view of chainmail dangling in that area. Good Morning Star One Two Two Three stopped infront of us and took off his helmet.
Smooth blonde hair fluttered out. Cupping the helmet against the waist, a beautiful young woman was standing among us.
"Ene?"
My gut constricts at the mere thought of the battle between her and Kaiser. What could possibly be on Kaiser's mind right now I wondered.
"Its you... I worried for nothing. You'll be a big help. Next time we fight, get ready to lose."
Ene tilted her head in confusion.
"The finals for the tournament, you blinded me with a light then did me in, in the face."
He smiled masking his anger while Ene scratched her head trying to remember.
"I'm Kaiser. A mercenary on bodygaurd duty. Let's get going."
He began walking ahead without us. Even calling out to him, he responded with a grunt. It didnt bother me as I occupied myself by talking to Ene.
"Hey so where are you from?"
My curiosity was never answered and I began to wonder if she had heard my question as her face was covered by her helmet.
"Ene?"
No response was given.
"I… don't know."
The quiet voice came out muffled. For some reason my gut clenched. I've heard the voice before.
"I feel like we met Ene"
"Yes."
"Oh really? But where…"
I could hear a faint cough inside her helmet. She didnt respond after that and I didn't ask anymore as she was drained out from talking this much.
We marched on with no breaks until the sun light almost came down. From there Kaiser strayed off the road. Coming into a fairly wooded area, he began chopping trees with his axe.
"We'll settle here, prepare for the night."
With all the task accomplished in less than an hour, we sat around the campfire.
"Kaiser."
"What is it boy?"
"You think Ron and his son got along well?"
"Yes. He gave me an expensive gift for saving his dad. I would never imagine being able to afford something like this in my mercenary career. Just chainmail cost alot already."
"Is that so.. must be nice to have a family."
Kaiser took off his helmet.
"I'm not sure kid. I've never met my blood family as well."
I stared at him and listened in. He planned to end it with that but the silence had made him feel compelled to finish.
"I'm not sure who they were. During a razing of a village. A man took me in and raised me for a bit. He was a mercenary as well so he died in battle when I was little. I couldnt remember him much."
He stared deep into the burning embers of the fire. Ene reached over to pat his head and thus brought him back into the present.
"Oh? And what about you silent girl. It's not fair for us to dwelve deep into our past while you tune in."
She backed off and undon her helmet.
"Sister… died.. years ago."
"O-oh"
Kaiser was troubled, he had dug himself into this mess and didn't know how to climb out of it.
"I killed her."
She curled up into her knees and silently sobbed. She looked pitiful as being the champion of the festival tournament in a defensiveless state. Kaiser imatatid what she had done before and reached over to pat her head.
"Oh man tonight's going to be a long night."
I couldn't help but let loose a chuckle. It was inappropriate but it wasn't a norm seeing Kaiser in distress
