Capítulo 29: Chapter 39: The Beauty of Pride

While Rem and Cy was gearing up for their plan at divine justice. Lux was doubling down on her morning exercise trying as hard as possible to break into the realm of Rank-A. She know from experience that what she got wasn't enough.

That was why she dialy ran to this park and trained harder. It was the only method she know.

"Three-hundred and three," Lux repeated another push-up. "Three-hundred and four... Three..."

"Good luck with that," said a prideful voice.

Meldina looked up toward a pink hair girl sitting on a branch of the three. Her smug smiled was as annoying as ever.

"What do you mean 'good luck with that'?" Lux said, repeating her push up.

"It won't work," Melodina jumped down from the branch. "When one of your stat hit the 499 value your body will be stuck until it either you accumulate enough power or training to breakthrough by force, which would take years by the way, or somehow you made a path for yourself."

"My father said he broke through due to our family high magic ability," Lux said. "My family was innately ancient and magical so our magic value is prodigiously high."

"Then why don't you train your magic like the rest of them," Melodina said. "If you did that from the beginning you would already reach A-Rank by now."

"I can't!" Lux threw up her hand. "I don't even know how to even use magic properly two month ago!"

"WHAT!?" Melodina nearly fall on her back from raw surprises. "Seriously!"

...

"I see," Melodies said leaning on the tree branch. "You surely had it rough."

"Yeah," Lux said, hanging up from the three and performing a set of sit-ups. "Thank to that I never really learned magic but because I had to hunt in the forest very often my instinct and dexterity was quite something."

Both girls was on the three chatting to each other about Lux's past. The sun was rising up toward noon and that was the moment things finally kicked into motion.

"Hey! Look it that arrogant..."

Melodies grabbed a stone from her pocket and flicked it near the newcomer's foot. The effect was like someone shooting a high caliber bullet into the ground.

"Eeek," the boy bravado disappeared but he didn't come alone. Several, people dressed like unpolished delinquent catch up to him.

They were from both sexes, holding starves and knife. Each of them looked juvenile and dressed differently but, one thing was the same, the anger they directed toward Melodies couldn't be faked.

"It not to late to bow down and apologize now you Demonic witch!"

"Yeah, you are an unnatural freak who shouldn't exist." Another girl said. "You and your shabby store should get out of this town."

Then they noticed Lux.

"What?" One guy with glasses and bad hair looked incredulous. "There are someone in this town who actually wanted be your friend."

One of the girl pointed at Lux.

"Hey, you over there. Get away from the witch! They would decimated and loot an entire town. You know that right? As an elf you should be helping us chased her out of this continent!"

Lux stared.

"Heh," Melodies trembled. "Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha."

She laughed and jumped down from the tree.

"Oh this is so funny, " Melodina looked at them and jumped down from the tree branch. "Did I owe you an apology? Again and again, you bound up in your little group and come for me. Yet, I beat you black and blue every time. Are you going to tell your mother and father? The last time I recall I beat them back too? Or are you going to tell the law-enforcement? A certain group of petulant children got sent home the last that happen? Come at me then! I am enjoying this! Let me prove to you why I am superior!"

"Superior?! You are just an unnatural freak!"

The lynch mob charged but Lux landed in front of them in a beautiful arc. She plucked one of the starves and snapped it.

The glared she gave them was livid and the mana responding to her rage is the testament of her ability.

"Let me tell you one health tip, " Lux said gritting her teeth. "For the love of the spirit, do not repeat the phrase 'unnatural freak' in front of me?"

"What are you going to do to us?" The boy joked. "Are you siding with the unnatural...ack!"

Lux chopped him in the throat and locked him in the choke-hold, cutting his air supply and let the limped body dropped down on the ground like a potato sack.

Melodina walked over to the group cracking her fingers.

The teenagers pale dropped their weapon and did the obvious.

"RUN!"

They ran away so fast you could barely see a dust cloud.

"Well, courageous aren't they?" Lux said. "Can't blame them thought I probably ran too."

"Oh, they will be back." Melodina said looking a bit sadder. "They always come back."

"This is not the first time isn't it."

"No, truth to be told, those guys used to look up to me," Melodina said, sitting down in the glass. "I used to be an idol you know. Strongest girl in the town. Talented at everything she did. They often asked me for help and happily gave it."

"What change?" Lux sat down next to her.

"They change. Once the awe died down the only thing that they saw is a demon who was simply too good at everything to the point it seemed like she cheated. The fact that their parent often told them about Demonic Continent's brutality didn't help. In the end they banded togather ad tried to push me down. I am quite proud about that you know. One little girl managed to united all the kid in the neighborhood against her. It quite pathethic. They tried everything. Spike my food, tried to spread the rumor about the shop, tried to mug, but I know them all like a book so I dodged it. Guess pointless struggles was the properties of weakling."

"And they hate you even more each time you one up them."

"Nah, I am used to it," Melodina smiled sunnily. "I don't feel anything at all."

"Cut it." Lux said. "I know what it felt like when admiration turned to fear."

Both girl stayed depressingly quiet for a long while.

...

After sharing few depressingly sulky story, two girls walk into the town market for some threat. Melodina was dragging her new found friend around the town as Lux drooled on nearly every candy store they had past. It was not an easy walk but for once in a long time Melodina felt a rare swelling in her chest she never felt in a very long time.

"So this one, " Melodina said holding up a golden rock. "You said it was given to you by a goddess right?"

"Yeah," Lux said. "I am unconscious..."

"Incredible," Melodina said. "I know you a few days and you spent half your time getting wasted."

"Hey!" Lux snatched back the ore. "It can't be helped okay. Your punch hurt like hell! And I can't take as much hit as you do?"

'The left... That stone on the left'

"What?" Lux said. "Hey, Melodina did you say something?"

"Nope, is something wrong with your ears?"

'The stone...'

Lux looked to the left seeing an old shop displaying several derelict artifacts. Among them is a stone studded with a purple gem. The ancient shopkeeper, who looked sixteen seconds away from falling into his own grave.

Melodina walked into the shop.

"Hello sir, " Lux said pointing at the purple gem. "What was that stone use for?"

"Y...you had a good eye little girl, " the old man said. "T...That was an ancient relic. The horse shape artifacts a...fitted with several precious minerals and operated by magic gem. Quite.. a precious model I...if I say do."

"I am not talking about the paper weight."

"T...Then you must be looking at Emeria Ocean Gem. It was founded in the far away continents used for healing property. Rumor said that it could be used to create Elixir of Immortality. The price would be quite high my..."

"That was not the one, grandpa..." Lux smiled stiffened.

Luckily a wild Melodina come to the rescue.

"Mr. Andy, can you tell me about this yellow skull?" Melodina was pointing at the metal skull five meters away from the purple stone.

"Oh that purple stone," The old shopkeeper frowned. "I bought it off along time ago it is akin to a Sentient material."

"I will take it thank you very much," Lux said. "How much is it?"

"Just 2500 credit my dear," The old man squinted. "That ears...are you perhaps a pixie?"

Lux smiled uncomfortably and Melodina gave her an expression that said deal with it.

"Yes, she is a pixie," Melodina smiled at the old man. "Do you need me to come and help water the garden this week end?"

"Of course," the old man squinted. "Melsunshine isn't it? You actually bought a friend here."

"Gramp, it's Melodina," Mel frowned at him. "Geez, you are getting senile. You should ask me to run a shop a long time ago. At this rate you are going to drop dead one day. It will be one hell of a disappointment if you lost the bet before it even begun."

"Ha, ha," the old shopkeeper laugh. "Lost to a brat like you! I, Bravo Andy, never lost a bet my entire life! Trust me kid I will be there to see that day. Now scram. I had something to talk to your friend. Prepare yourself to a lost Melojest."

"It Melodina!" The succubus huffed and moved out of the door.

...

Lux picked up the stone and followed Melodina but a hand grabbed her arm.

She looked back at the old man.

"Hey, little girl, I never see that idiot this happy in a long while now," the old man said. "I don't think I had anymore time left to look at that girl. Please take care of her?"

"Huh," Lux's eyes widen.

"She was a joy for many people you know," the old man looked at Melodina's figure. "She had an incredible and unbendable pride. This coupled with the fact that she was too smart meant she had no peer to call her own. Yet, despite feeling lonely, she refused to show vulnerability transforming that pain into power to cheer people up."

The old man looked at a photograph.

"When my wife died a few years ago that little girl make me a bet. That day I am so depressed that I prepared to hang myself after my wife funeral." The old man chuckle. "Then a little succubus, a non-combat races of all people, arrived and said that someone as depress as me was damping her glorious aura. That little girl told me that my wife wouldn't want to see me so sad and challenge me to the bet to live long enough to see the day her named will be heard across the entire world. If I win the bet, she said she will give me an honor to be written in her legend. Ha, ha, ha."

The old man laughed telling Lux the tale of that one little girl.

"While other people in this town hated her because her guts. Many of us was inspired by it. Some folks here lived to one up that little girl you know."

"Why are you telling me this?" Lux said stunned.

"Because I am going to lose that bet," the old man said. "I am living on a timer and, deep down, that girl knows it too and it will crush her from the inside. So went she gave a disappointed groan when I kicked the bucket, I would like you to help be a shoulder for her to cry on."

...

Lux exited that shop gloomily to meet Melodina who starred at her.

"What did the old man tell you?"

Before Lux got a chance to answered a voice interrupted them.

"Lux! Mel!" yelled a panicking goddess who ran toward them out of nowhere. "Help!!!"

"My name is not Mel, it's Melodina!" Mel yelled at her. "It a glorious name so called it correctly!"

Cy huffed.

"This is a bad. I need your help. I really don't want to do this but we don't have a choice! I need an ingredient from that place but I forbid from ever walking into it! What should I do?!!!!!"

"Calm down what are you talking about!"

"That place was like haunted house!" Cy said bawling in tears. "THE MAGIC GEM SHOP!"
