Capítulo 97: the day everything ended
Preparing himself for the day, Alex grimly sends a mental command, raising the island's wards to their maximum setting. Putting his school bag on the side, he emptied his storage content on his bed. Sending a pulse of magic in the runes, the bowstring appears, vanishing at the second pulse. Each of his six bundles of three hundred arrows was checked, like his thousand of throwing knives. His six knives were sharps, as were his two short sword talons.
"Bow and arrows, check." Said him before sending them back. "The knives are good too." All but eighteen throwing knives were send back in his storage as he fastens his holders on his legs before disillusioning them. Alex put his shoulder holster over his shirt and belt, exchanged for the one with the sheath on its back.
Four knives were put in them, while the remaining two followed the throwing knives. Pondering for a second, he sends his short swords back, too, knowing there would be more of a hindrance in the school's cramped corridor.
Ready, Alex exits his room before locking it both manually and magically.
-It time?- Asked CS sombrely.
'Yes, the outbreak will soon come, its a matter of hours now.'
-How will we know?-
'The effect should be gradual and visible, like dizziness and headache. With a thousand of the population lack of reaction, there should be some case in every class.'
When he exited the dorms, he wasn't entirely surprised to see Saya there. Her frown all he needed to know; she felt it too.
Seeing Alex appears, Saya frown eased in an uncertain smile. Now that the outbreak was soon on them, Alex didn't hesitate to hug her publicly, drawing some gazes and whispers from the surrounding. Momently stunned at his choice of revealing their close relation, Saya took a second before hugging back, taking some force in his reassuring presence.
"Why.."
"You felt it too, right?" Alex cut her, making Saya realise that it wasn't just a bad feeling but a magical warning of the sort that something had gone wrong.
"What happens?" Asked her with a worried tone.
"I don't know exactly, but call your parents, tell them to prepares for something to go extremely wrong in the next hours. To hasten their preparation on stocking goods before closing the estate."
Hearing Alex words, her eyes widen and whispered. "You know something was going to happen; that why you told them to do that last week." It wasn't a question, more a realisation on her part.
"Yes, but I didn't know when and how. I have been attenuating to magic longer that you felt the building of power ever since I arrived here. Be sure to tell them to focus on themselves and that I will look over to you. We may lose contact rapidly, and I know Yuriko would worry greatly about you.
Your father too, but would prioritise the estate's stability before looking for you to be sure that you have a stable house to return. If he knows I look over you, it will lessen the burden and made him focus entirely on his task."

If it happens before her change, Saya would have started to rent, but since them, she mellowed, and her sudden swift had made Alex her world centre, not her family anymore. She still kept a strong tie with them, but she wouldn't react like her cannon-self now.
Nodding at him, she immediatly took out her phone and called her mother.
"Mama, it Saya, I have something to said..."
Alex attention turned to the mass of students slowly exiting the dorms, making their way to their class. Taking a light sniff, Alex frowned, feeling the taint rapidly taking over most of them.
-The world population will really turn?-
'Yes, from what I smell, at least half of the infected would turn into the first wave, while the remaining will be the prime target. Those spared from the parasite would not be out of danger. With the beacon that the second half is, the zombies would turn to them too once close. I don't know how to transmit the parasite and turn them, but I hope it through physical touch if its proximity or ever airborne, the school, and any crowded place would turn into nesting place.
Without knowing the potency of the parasite, it could be hazardous. Saya and I should be shielded from passive poisoning with our active magic, but I doubt even we would be able to throw off a direct infection.'
-H...- CS was cut when Saya returned to Alex side, tending him the phone. Taking it, Saya mouthed his 'Papa.' He nods before bringing it to his hear.
"Alex on the phone."
"How much are you sure of your hunch?" Directly demanded, Soichiro voice on the other side.
"On my life, the world gets off too easily from the plague; I refuse to trust it was the end with the measy causality it dealt."
The other side kept quiet for a short time before he responds.
"Look after Saya." Seriously said the man, telling Alex that he took the warning at heart.
"With my life."
"Good." Alex could felt the man relief in the imperceptible change of tone. Knowing how he felt for his daughter, Alex give him the last warning. "Soichiro, my land is now under martial law, and I possess an automatic defence system. Any threat to my territory will be dealt with deadly force; no matters its origin. The island is possibly one of the safest haven in the world from now; I won't tolerate any hostile invasion."

On the other side, Soichiro and all present in the room were too stunned to react to Alex words as the line cut.
"Sir, what do you need us to do?" Asked Kengo, present as one of Soichiro most trusted man, and liaison with Alex. "Waka isn't the type to joke around with this type of situation; I fear that there much more than we were told. If it wasn't for Ojou-sama close relation with Waka, I doubt we would have been warned."
"Kengo right dear, with our government action against him the last week, other than Saya, and perhaps us, not a single Japanese would be allowed to cross..." Yuriko world was cut as they hear the sound of an explosion, rings in the distance.
Before any of them could move out of the room, one of the servants hurriedly enter.
"Okusama, the highway leading to Waka island was just blown up!"
Hearing the report, all three in the room were sure that the situation was much worse than what Alex had told them. In the last few weeks, the newly elected mayor, his council, and the rest of the city learned of the construction of a heavily-looking fronter construct on the entry of the new highway. This had spreads multiple rumours, but most thoughts of a powerplay from the island's residents after the Japanese side had erect their post to control the frontier.
None had been blind to the evident hostility between their government and the island' small nation that popped out of nowhere. None had taken the new islanders seriously, as none had been seen inland, and that the island wasn't able to support more than a few thousand at most.
The constant influx of large cargo ships had raised even more rumours, but the island was too far for any to know what was happening there. The few fighters sent by the government had all been shot down, and no one knows of the pilots' fate as none return.
With their government's tension and aggression, the Takagi household patriarch knows that they would receive no further support than a warning. Soichiro knows it was futile to try and made Alex change his mind. As the young teen had told him, he was a hunter, striking when the prey was at his weakest. If a disaster were to fall soon, Alex would strike by refusing the help peoples would seek.
This wasn't sitting well with him, but he knows that Alex pride and honour had been challenged, and he wouldn't fold. He may not like the outcome, but he wasn't blind enough to not see the government's flaw.
"Prepare to send all available men to gather as much as supplies they can take hold on; everyone is to return in three hours; after this, the estate will be closed. I will go and warn the mayor, but I doubt it would be useful. All servants are dismissed for today duty and will fetch any family members possible in the timeframe!"
""Yes!""
Hearing his orders, all concerned rapidly disperse to execute them.

Giving her phone back to Saya, Alex could see the uneasiness in his mate eyes. Taking her back in his arms, he rubbed her back soothingly, easing her tense body.
"If anything happens near you, you will feel it. You go to an enclosed place and don't move, nor made a sound until I came for you. If you felt that it is impossible, try to go to a place with a less as possible escape available and easily secured, like the rooftop or something. You are stronger than a human and would be able to fend off anything closing on you. Avoid contact with anything suspect, and make sure to ventilate the place you are in. I shouldn't take much time to came." Said Alex, before taking the remaining knives from his storage. "Here, kept this on you, and use them if you need, but remembers, only at last resort."
Saya looked at him and the extended sheathed blades before nodding and putting them in her school bag. She pecked on his lips before taking his hand in her.

After escorting Saya to her class and briefly sniffing the air, Alex left relieved, knowing that not a single classmate of hers was infected.
-She's smart; she won't fall for the panic and kept to the classroom if something happens.-
'That would be the best that can happen.' Nodded Alex, knowing CS was right. 'She is also in the same class as Takashi, who's thankfully still suspended. With any chance, he will be turned before we cross path again if we did.'
At the boy's mention, CS sight, happy that he was suspended for a month after his short visit to the headmaster. Alex had also been invited but received a warning for his unnecessary violent response. Still, all teachers had also be warned not to start any conflict, now knowing that Alex wasn't fearing a bad report and would immediatly retaliate.

Entering his classroom, Alex didn't stop for more than a second before seating. His eyes didn't betray any feeling actually in turmoil in his mind. Without one aware, he slightly pulled his desk back and on the side. Alex had his sight on all the classroom with the right position, and it fully infected classmate.
