The swordsman be swordsmanning

I pivoted on my foot, bringing my sword up in a precise cut. The attack sheared through the golem's ribcage, spewing red liquid that mimicked blood. Turning, I dodged an axe blow from a rampaging 'general,' clothed in the same red and gray ensemble as the rest of its conjured army, only differentiated by the little crown on its head. Seeing an opening, I channeled a bolt of lightning in my offhand, letting it fly toward the general.

Hmm... I'll admit that my preferences for media are really strict. Most fanfictions and stories in general don't reach my internal bar of quality. I read to better understand the world and actually be engaged with characters (thing about how I write DN, for instance), and most people don't really do that in the way I'm interested in. But there are a few! A Soldier Adrift: Captain Westeros and A God Adrift: THORHAMMER are both really good fanfics. Both are MCU crossed over with A Song of Ice and Fire and Warhammer Fantasy respectfully. There are also the stories by LithosMaitreya like Ring-Maker and Of Many Colors: those are both Lord of the Rings crossovers and tie into a wider verse by the author, which is really cool. The only Naruto fanfic I read is called Orochimama. It's actually really damn good. Those are the few I still actively read! I don't think any of these are on WN, though.

Taci in canon had decades upon decades of training in the Aether Orb. Taci in DN didn't get a full twenty years, I don't think: but training with Arthur absolutely is more beneficial than training endlessly with Kordri. I'd say that DN!Taci certainly would surpass his canon counterpart if he trained with Arthur alone instead of Kordri. Also, Toren and Sylvie both have their empathy and kindness as a sort of foundational cornerstone of who they are. Sylvie is incredibly kind, and that's what sets her apart from Arthur, and especially Grey. I wanted to really show how her willingness to open herself to pain has left her hurt, just as Toren was.

At this point he's significantly stronger than Seris. He was a bit below her in power before his training arc, but he's among the strongest "lessers" alive.

You are correct. Chul's view of justice and morality is very simplistic. It's black and white, and he hasn't had the chance in his life to witness the nuances of evil. That's a very important thing to note.

The guard stuttered, and I felt a rising fury grow in my gut. My face dipped into a scowl as I watched the guard sputter to respond, the fat one raising his hand to strike him once again.

Thank you! I set out to write this fanfic as a way to genuinely tell a story. I think I've succeeded in many places, failed in others (the Rat is one that was haphazard and I agree that it didn't land like it could have.) But I try and look at this from a lens of characters and what they struggle with. Toren and Sylvie are so very similar, and canon TBATE is almost afraid to let things go too deep with its characters nowadays. The journey of this fanfic is my journey of trying to understand what I'm writing about in and of itself. Toren's struggle to remain kind in a cruel world is something that resonates so very deeply with me, and I think that's what makes it feel so real when it is put to the page. Thank you for sticking in there with this fanfic! It can be quite demotivating to write when very few people will read. Toren plays his symphonies to a grand audience, but I've got a select few in my front rows listening and enjoying what music I have to give. I think that's so very valuable, too. Probably even moreso than fame :)

Taci is actually a bit weaker than his canon counterpart. Maybe 3/4 the strength of his original? But it's really important to note how similar this circumstance is to Toren's confrontation with Chul. Two tantrumming, child asuras come to wreak havoc, and Toren is all that stands in their way. But the last time, all that amounted was sorrow and tragedy. Can Toren avoid that this time?

Lady Dawn expected to die. After casting her soul to the wind, taking a one-in-a-million chance to escape the wretched dungeons of Taegrin Caelum, the once-caged songbird of the Asclepius wishes nothing more than to find her Hearth and warn them of the coming danger. Instead, she’s found herself a shade, anchored to a young man who knows far too much—and with far less hope than she’d started with. Toren Daen, for his part, only wanted to make it home safely. Now he’s in a world taken straight from the page, questioning what is real and what is fiction, and scrambling to make something worthwhile. And with his foresight, there’s only one way that Toren can see to keep this new world safe: prevent the descent of the Legacy. But those in power will not make it easy: Nico Sever is in a league of power all on his own, and Arthur Leywin bears the burden of Fate a continent away. In this familiar-yet-not world of mana, monsters, and looming deities, any misstep along the roads of Alacrya and the High Sovereign’s Dominion could lead to a Fate worse than death. But what is death to a phoenix? With a burning secret in his mana core, knowledge of the future, and a maelstrom of fears and questions, Toren might just survive to be more than what Lady Dawn expected him to be. He might just survive to waylay the encroaching tide of death in the proxy war between raging asura clans. More than all of that, he might just live. (Semi-SI into Alacrya. Updates Tuesday/Saturday.)
