It would certainly be something I'd read and maybe enjoy and we don't really know a whole lot about Tom's time in school so you could do a lot with it and you could do a little with it. As for keeping it Canon it depends on what you want to do with it if you want to make it a more entertaining story I would suggest going less Cannon but still keeping some key points.
