I would agree but the others were in serious trouble and needed to be saved and Carl was probably the only one fast enough to save them (besides Borsalino but he is entangled with Raleigh [Is that how you spell it?]). Plus Whitebeard was right by Marco and probably would have made it near impossible to kill him. Not to mention his healing flames basically make him invulnerable and Carl can't focus on him forever since Whitebeard, Roger and other top tiers are still around.
