I think you build the world background to forced, why would decker write about common knowledge in his journel. I think it would make more sense if Jacob reads the book and prices the O formation together. For example: He read that decker mentioned rarer species, common and uncommon species. he also called rarer dogs. This way Jacob can analyze this information and know that means that there is a species more powerful than rarer, this adds also a little bit of mystery.
