While I do agree with you, you have to remember that humans tend to forget what's "right" in times of dire need. If the relation with the Mc's mother is high, and the possibility of death is looming.. a sense of shock and despair might be the immediate response. of course not everyone is like this, I think I'm generally speaking from my experience with novels
