I think its more so we know what breathing style Seiji is using rather than something they do to perform the form.
I've only read chapter 12, but the story progression is amazing and I love the character development. I hope to see plenty more updates in the future.
From what I understand, Beast Boy is connected to The Red, which grants him the ability to transform into any living creature in his verse, whether mythical or mundane. This includes demons, dragons, alien animals, ect.. NOTE: I don't know if he can or can't turn into other species ex. kryptonian
