I can't believe that so many people are saying this is a dumb mindset, I think she's completely correct in thinking that. The academy wants a stereotypically perfect hero, not someone who has wants and desires.

I was wondering how he understood their names, but I assume they gestured to themselves and said their names, just saying.
The older elf's name was Nayta, while the younger one was named Melina. Other than knowing that they were mother and daughter, he couldn't learn anything else through gestures alone. Gestures just aren't enough.
