The reason people believe this today is due to a really old book called Gods of Pegãna where one of the gods, named Mana-Yood-Sushai, dreams reality. And when he wakes up, all is destroyed as it was all a dream of that god. Sometime after Lovecraft's death, people looked at the 2 characters and combined them together, thus came the Azathoth dreams reality idea.
